You'll pay a little more (~$10) for a USB wireless adapter, but if you don't want to open your machine it's worth it.
Here's a combo kit that gives you a Netgear wireless router and a USB adapter...

I use VNC both personally and for my day job. To be safe, I always leave the port closed on my firewall until I need to use it. (I remote in to my firewall, open the port, then fire up VNC).
