I know there was a previous post discussing a similar topic, but I think it is worth further mention.
I highly recommend bringing the ole laptop to the airport with you. It makes the wait seem like nothing. I'm gonna arrive to the airport way early all the time now. Is especially good for airlines like Southwest which is first come first serve (though you can get your passes online before getting there now). I can't wait till they have wireless in planes...then it will be really on!! I'll have to settle for the direct tv on jet blue for now I'm on my way to the Big Apple. It should be on! Hope everyone has a great New Years!!! |

I too have enjoyed using the internet to play poker while on the road, but not in a public place. You are in danger of having your personal information transmitted to anybody else that is connected through a public connection. Firewalls are a must, but it is still easy for someone else to get your transmissions. Several of the "security" systems offered with wireless are a joke.

Don't most sites use SSL or some other encryption to receive your transmitted user name and password? It would be easier for someone to brute force an account than to sit in an airport hoping for a tidbit of info they'd have to then decrypt.
Plus, even with the best firewalls, you are always at some level of risk when you're on-line. Of course, if you eat at restaurants you probably frequently hand your credit card over to a complete stranger so they can carry it out of your sight. (In other words, we all accept the minor levels of risk for our convenience). |

Just a note:
The US wi-fi equipment doesn't work in Europe because of different standards. (or at least in some places) |

no, but i felt like an idiot after reading this thread. i was stuck in the atlanta airport for 3 hours monday morning and i went to this "store" that rented me a quiet place and a computer. i had my laptop in the terminal tho. i would have never thought to try it. i guess it is for the better because of the security issue, but these days the only people allowed in the terminals are ticketed passengers so i would imagine this has reduced the security risk. the computer store was very expensive. |
