We're currently putting in about 20 man hours a day. Ok fine, it is possible, but how the hell can we get people to spend that much time punching in verification codes?

[/ QUOTE ]

Is it possible we're missing the obvious? I haven't read this whole thread, but in what I have read, there's no mention of the Forest Elementary faculty, staff and parents. Perhaps joshman1204 could find a way to let them know of our heroic efforts on their behalf and ask them to join in. Could he even do some sort of bulk email with a link to this thread?

I'm not suggesting that they aren't already doing a few votes a day, but surely there's is excess capacity in that system which could amount to the difference we need to pull this one out. We know they have the motivation...

Site is very slow this morning and I've gotten this message "Could not connect: Lost connection to MySQL server during query" a few times. Always with firefox, IE is reliable (in this case) but still slow.

Anyone else notice this?

Ok, I am in at Offtopic.com. I'm considering a str8forward post that includes a link to this thread. Ok, here's what I'll say:

Topic: THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!

Dell computers is sponsoring a competition between 3800 schools to see who can generate the most support for their school. The prize is 5 $10K packages of laptops for the 5 winning schools.

The other other topic forum (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=3566719&page=2&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1) of twoplustwo.com has banded together to push Forest Elementary School. One of our members has a kid that goes there and he brought it to our attention. No one has ever met the father, and we don't even know the sex of the kid, but we have catapulted Forest elementary from obscurity to national fame at 21st place.

I am here to create a union between OT and OOT. A union that will result in victory for Forest elementary. We need your help. Join the fight!! (http://www.futureready.org/school/?pid=01541435)

oh, can't see the link? Basically inside of five minutes there were 5 replies. The first was a 5 second photoshop clip of Tom Cruise talking to a penis (instead of a mike) and getting jizzed in the face. The next 4 replies included 3 quotes repeating that image and one guy saying "Fcuk the children."

Operation Offtopic is a failure.

CSC,

I get the impression there's a huge difference in the reaction you get at offtopic.com based on whether or not you've got an avatar.

If Stuey does get a sub, and uses his consdierable experience to line up some suitable avatar, I reckon it'd be worth him starting another thread.

Joshman,

Can you give us a sense of what it's like on the ground in Forest North Country? Has the meteoric rise emboldened the locals' spirits? Are you hearing what other families and Forest Friends are doing to fill the gap?

As I see it, if those with the biggest vested interest (parents, faculty and students) could account for 4000-6000 votes a day, our ragtag band could easily push the effort over the top.

6000 votes daily = 100 families plus 20 teachers or administrators doing 50 votes each. We can easily make up the difference with OOT alone and any successful outreach is pure gravy.

CardSharpCook
10-12-2005, 05:17 PM
Definately, in theory we can kick some ass, but in practise (why I am I hanving trouble spelling this word), there are way too many free-riders. If we got a 10 vote a night commitment FOUR MINUTES!!! from every student and parent at Forest elimentary, we'd score 20K votes a day. 20k A DAY!!!! Instead you've got people like Stuey, Tony, CB, Mainevent, and many more, putting in 2-300 a night and these kids do not do very much. Or at least the sure aren't averaging 10 votes a night.

I am still working with the school to get the word out to all parents that OOT is trying to win this for us. I actually showed the principal this thread and he was amazed by the response from everyone!

They are getting flyers printed as we speak and should be sending them out tommorow. I have been at work for the past week solid so I cant get to OOT but I have put in several hours of non-stop voting.

we are 15th hottest and 17th overall. Sadly it seems to be running a little slow right now, but I'll keep checking and so should you! We've made some big gains the past couple of days and a big weekend push could have us in the top 15. Those bratty kids are using their school computer labs to get ahead, I just know it. They won't fare so well on the weekend. Our poor kids have no computer lab. They NEED us!

Yeah during the day sometimes its so slow I don't even try to vote. I wait until night and 3 browser them. I imagine I am between 85-90% accurate by now. The more you do it the easier it gets. Hopefully the school will come through with enough votes to put us over the top.

Keep refreshing the link window when it is at all tough, and it keeps giving you new looks at each number/letter.
