We need to figure something out cause we arent really making much headway. We have 8k votes and it first has over 90k now. The bad thing is we are just 5th in the daily totals so we are gaining on the pack but we are just barely hanging with the top 5 on a daily basis. i did a project involving this a semester back - it's fairly easy to do (no more than 5 lines of code) using a java xml parser such as Rome: https://rome.dev.java.net/

but what useful things could you do with it besides create a pretty graph? all the info you want is already right there.


i too think that you really need to talk directly to the school officials about this and let them know about the help you have gotten, and if they want to win this then it is well within their grasp. the rest is up to them.

Thanks I found it. Crazy to see that the team in 5th has about 50k votes already and we have a little over 8600. The hottest school for the day has over 10k in one day which is sick. I think I will keep voting for the night until I see us crack 10k. Cracking the top 50 might start to be slow going as this thing seems top heavy.

We are trying to get the school oficials to realize that thanks to the help of OOT they now have a legit chance of winning this thing. Hopefully they will get the kids hyped up a little more and maybe even start passing out flyers or something.

I can see it but have two suggestions:

1. allow anonymous comments. right now you have to register and [censored] in order to show your school spirit.

2. the first blog entry should have a link to the contest and an explanation of how the voting works with a note on the difficulty in reading the codes.

Bison is our greatest weapon here if you think about it. He would have a ton of ideas someone should try to get his help. I don't expect him to use his position at work to help us. But he is in the know as to how internet traffic is controled. And in general always comes up with stuff no one has thought of yet on any topic. Help bison!!

Btw I didn't explain well but I was thinking if we posted on the Japan site in Japanese we could tell them that voting for us is a good way to learn to distinguish between the English letters.

I think the reason the voting box is so tricky is they knew young kids would be doing most of the voting and thought they would try to get them to learn while they did it.

Everything seems to be working fine now.

I think the hottest for the day stats are messed up. Things started to act weird late last night. It was saying we were 3rd in total votes. We were 2nd for the day with over 600 votes. And this was after maybe 3 hrs when they reset the numbers.

It is just a bug and it will fix itself. Keep voting all is well.

We are in the top 60 overall now, which is sweet. It will be hard to improve our overall rank from here on in. Our goal should be to improve our rank by about 5 per day till we hit the top 20. Then try and move up 1 rank per day. It is going to be hard from here on in but if we keep the pace we have been going at things should work out.

We need a list of the ideas we want to try and we need people with the skills to get them done to step up and do them. Some people are crazy voters and some people are good at the networking and advertising parts. Some are good at both I bet.

This is the time to increase the amount of people on our team. While at the same time continuing to do most of the voting ourselves.



1. Send emails to everyone on your friends list and tell them to tell as many people as they can.

2. We need a group of 5 people to make a post that does not sound like blatant spam. And then get it posted on as many forums as possible. Bulletin boards also

3. We need a web designer to make the web page that will go at voteforforest.com.

4. We need a trustworthy person to receive funds to be used for advertising. I'm chipping in for sures. I trust the OP enough but I will let others decide.

5. Print out those fliers and stuff from the voting page and leave them lying around the office or coffee room.

7. Put the voting link in all your online profiles.

8. Quote this and edit my ideas as needed plus continue to add your ideas here if you have them.




If you do one of the above tasks tell the OP or someone so we know it has been done and no one wastes time doing the same thing later.

Our pace is very good but I expect the top 5 to increase their pace near the end. So we need to prepare now or get wiped out later when it counts. Would be better also if we had someone in charge of the planning as I can't find my way out of a paper bag most days. But I thought I would try and get our ideas together and try and focus our effort as I feel it is the most important part if we are going to stay strong for 40 days.

I can see the individual colors just fine (so if you were to pick any pixel within or around the 7 I could accurately tell you what color it is) but the can't see the "pattern" of the 7.

I don't think the votes are added to the running day totals at the time they are processed. I think they are held in a cache and then at set times the totals are updated. As there have been several odd things happening for us and the other teams. In the end all our votes count though don't worry. vote vote vote /images/graemlins/grin.gif

So I think they stop updating the totals about 2 hrs before the end of the day when they reset the totals. Then they put whatever votes were held in the cache on the running total for the next day.

We need a list of the ideas we want to try and we need people with the skills to get them done to step up and do them. Some people are crazy voters and some people are good at the networking and advertising parts. Some are good at both I bet.

This is the time to increase the amount of people on our team. While at the same time continuing to do most of the voting ourselves.



1. Send emails to everyone on your friends list and tell them to tell as many people as they can.

2. We need a group of 5 people to make a post that does not sound like blatant spam. And then get it posted on as many forums as possible. Bulletin boards also

3. We need a web designer to make the web page that will go at voteforforest.com.

4. We need a trustworthy person to receive funds to be used for advertising. I'm chipping in for sures. I trust the OP enough but I will let others decide.

5. Print out those fliers and stuff from the voting page and leave them lying around the office or coffee room.

7. Put the voting link in all your online profiles.

8. Quote this and edit my ideas as needed plus continue to add your ideas here if you have them.




If you do one of the above tasks tell the OP or someone so we know it has been done and no one wastes time doing the same thing later.

Our pace is very good but I expect the top 5 to increase their pace near the end. So we need to prepare now or get wiped out later when it counts. Would be better also if we had someone in charge of the planning as I can't find my way out of a paper bag most days. But I thought I would try and get our ideas together and try and focus our effort as I feel it is the most important part if we are going to stay strong for 40 days.

Yup we will need to make the team larger as we go. We are doing fine now and we need to keep voting as much as possible.

If you watch the lead teams they are not voting very much right now. They wait till there is a challenge then they turn it on. Like a oval track cycling race it is cat and mouse. We can get in striking distance but once we are noticed they are going to chain them kids to the computers and we need to be ready to do 10-15K votes per day for as long as needed.

It would seem like we could never catch these guys but we can!

We have to keep voting at our insane pace of course. But we have to get 3 or 4 times as many people voting.

If that means getting more ootiots to vote cool but I think we need to reach a new forum or a new group of people that would enjoy this challenge.

Brainstorm up a idea and then we must follow through with it. We really need to focus our effort on doing the smart thing at this point.

(also, I don't think that the other schools will keep the pace for 40 days, because it is an insane pace, and people get bored, like I did after reading 200 posts in this thread - SO - we need someone to track the daily performance of the top 5 schools and tally their total daily votes. I suspect that we will start to see it drop. That is when OOT needs to keep going. All of this current work is just to keep pace, but when they start to slow down, that's when OOT will roar past.)

I kept up with this thread for a while, but don't really want to search the last few pages before asking this. Is anyone a member of any big online gaming forums? Gaming like Halo, Counter Strike etc. Those players would get into this thing in the same way that OOT has.

Also, you might want to do an ebay auction. That could gain a lot of interest if done right.
