A new World Series of Poker champion will be crowned when play resumes today at 4pm (Las Vegas time) at Binion's. The championship will be contested by eight "unknowns" and "bad boy" (or just misunderstood?) Mike Matusow.

Everybody will be a millionaire after this tournament. For the first time, everybody who made the final table will take home at least $1,000,000. Here are the payouts.

1st $7,500,000
2nd $4,250,000
3rd $2,500,000
4th $2,000,000
5th $1,750,000
6th $1,500,000
7th $1,300,000
8th $1,150,000
9th $1,000,000

Chip stacks are particularly even in the middle of the pack and the chip leader doesn't have nearly as commanding a lead as Greg Raymer had a year ago. Here are the seating assignments and chip stacks at the start of play.

Joseph Hachem - $5,420,000 (seat 1)
Andrew Black - $8,140,000 (seat 2)
Tex Barch - $9,330,000 (seat 3)
Daniel Bergsdorf - $5,270,000 (seat 4)
Mike Matusow - $7,410,000 (seat 5)
Aaron Kanter - $10,700,000 (seat 6)
Brad Kondracki - $1,180,000 (seat 7)
Steve Dannenmann - $5,460,000 (seat 8)
Scott Lazar - $3,370,000 (seat 9)]

Anyone know any of these guys online handles? Matusow's are well-known to be MrPokeJoke on Stars and I think he is dill pickle on UB.

About 40 minutes left of 10k Ante, 50k/100k blinds.

So we don't get all of the questions again when CP doesn't have updates early on.

Unless Harrah's changes it, the cards will be dealt at 7:00 pm EDT (4 pm local)

Is 4pm "local" vegas time, or 2+2 time?

Also, I know this has been asked before but I lost the link in the sea of wsop threads. What is the site which is providing the live coverage like Stars did last year?

As to the other, I don't know who's providing "live" coverage. Card Player is blogging some hands- check their site and go to the WSOP live updates section

I was just curious as to what the 50K chips look like. The text reports have described them differently so I don't have a good mental picture. Obviously, I'll see them on TV but the big denomination chips didn't get used (I don't think) until the ME so it'll be quite a few weeks until the later rounds make it to ESPN.

Would poker be as big as it is today had Mike Matusow been at the final table or won it instead of Moneymaker?

Title: Matusow and Sheikhan
Log: Matusow and Sheikhan continue lobbing insults and taunts at one another, much to the delight of the crowd. One of them appears to be taking it much more seriously than the other. We won't say which one, but it's not Matusow.

Title: Comedy Hour at the Binion's
Log: While Mike Matusow and Shawn Sheikhan continue to banter back and forth on table 117. Scott Lazar, in the two seat on table 129 leaned back from the table and decided to join in the banter. Lazar leaned back and suggested, "Switch that table to decaf!" The joke lightened the escalating confrontation between Matusow and Sheikhan.

Title: WSOP or WWE
Log: At the final table, it is hard to tell if we are at the World Series of Poker or a World Wrestling Entertainment event. Mike "The Mouth" Matusow and Shahram "Iron Sheik" Sheikhan have tossed verbal jabs at one another all day, It just got a little Jerry Springer like at the final table when Matusow went into a long diatribe about giving Shahram a million bucks and then beating him out of it on the felt. The crowd went nuts, Sheikhan’s supporters started pushing towards the stage and someone was escorted out the doors by security. The tension is high with $24 million up for grabs between the remaining players.

The guy is just an idiot. I still remember him yelling at Raymer and then crying like a little girl when he got busted.

After last year's World Series I would have agreed with you. But everything I have read, seen and heard since then has made me really like Mike and I am definitely pulling for him this year. At this point another amateur winning is not going to increase the pool of fish for anything except the WSOP qualifiers. Mike sometimes acts like an ass at the table, but its his way of needling people (and is a hell of a lot better than H-Dog's tactics). Mike is a pro who lets his emotions out a little too much and it is clear that others who know him understand this and that they generally feel he is a great guy. Even he and Raymer have become friendly this year after last years incidents, and Mike seemed genuinely disgusted about the play that took Raymer out.

I guess this is a longwinded way of saying GO MIKE, show everyone that the pro's can still do it in the donkfest that is the ME.

I have to admit Matusow has grown on me. His tantrums this year appear to be self-depreciating caricatures of himself. He's taking on the "bad" guys and leaving the "good" guys alone. Unlike last year when he came off looking like a tool, this year he seems to be using his image as a weapon with a purpose. Gonna be an interesting final table with "The Mouth" there among the unkowns. Too bad his nemesis from yeaterday has packed it up but I'm sure Mike will find a new target.

I'm pulling for Matusow here and looking forward to the ESPN broadcasts of the ME.

Anyone else notice how his stack went from about $2 million at the start of yesterday to over $13 million at one point? Too bad he made that call with KJ vs. JJ at the end of the night, I guess Fillmaff got to him or something.

I still like his chances though, he played very well yesterday.

John "Tex" Barch will be 2005 WSOP Champion.

He plays good but more importantly won't let the spotlight bother him and he has played in bigger plo and plh games for quite a few year. Nerves won't be a factor and I think we can count on a Mike Matusow blow up. I was there when he bluffed off a ton of money at the final table with 7-2 off. It will happen again.

Earlier today, a friend argued that Matusow's chances were "twice as good as ICM indicated". So, Matusow has 13.1% of the total stack in play right now, and I promptly offered my friend 8-3 on Matusow winning, which he took even more promptly.

Who do you think got the better of this? Or, is it roughly equal?

In the inky article about Brad K., it said he became a millionare by reaching the final table. Yeah...hes a millionare if he doesnt pay taxes. I may or may not be correct here, but don't the big winners all have to pay 37% or something crazy like that? That is some major juice.

I know they are still getting $650,000 or so, but doesnt that turn the buyin into a 6,300+3,700?

Recliner

No, because they might not pay US taxes. Also, I don't have the tax tables in front of me but once you start making over like 200k a year or so you end up paying really high taxes anyways so does that mean your job is 120k+80k (Or whatever it actually is)?

AcesUp

For those amounts, they will pay 35% in Federal taxes, plus any State taxes due (I live in California, and it's another 9.3%).

Of course, buy-in fees and any other tournament or side-game losses are deductible up to the amount won.

Interesting ... I think ESPN can do plenty with this final table.

6 handsome guys, the Evil Marcel Luske, Mike the Mouth, and some other guy.

Add that to the inherent rivalry between Swedes and Aussies (a remnant of the Swedo-Australian conflict of 1956-1982), and this is going to be a final table to remember.

(FWIW, Sweden is the country in the world that has not been to war for the longest continous time, almost 200 years. Partly, that was because of cowardish behaviour in WWII. Please, no comments on that in this thread.)

Maybe you haven't read it yet, but he gives his thoughts on the thread or two below this one. "Thanks again for your support" I think is the title of it.

BTW, Mike would not make a good representative for this game, and I don't think Mike wants to give anything back. My impression of the guy is that he thinks of himself only and doesn't pick his acquaintances very well...

I'm in full agreement with Greg on this one. I seem to experience a trashtalker every week now. I still keep the chat on...it's a fun read.

if you have Comcast On Demand cable you might be able to see some "interesting" poker shows on there. they are from the Players Network. its kinda funny that there is a ton of gambling related content on there.

anyways, there are ON Demand shows for poker and the one that is currently on there features Matusow, Sklansky, and Todd Brunson talking about Omaha Hi-Lo. you can tell that Sklansky doesnt want to be there. Matusow is constantly talking and stepping over everyone and Sklansky just has this look on his face that is priceless. All 2+2'ers should check this out.

Comcast digital cable. go to On Demand, then Lifestyle, then Gambling, then Poker.

I'm predicting a lot of action based on this payoff structure. The jump from 10th to 9th is was 400K! no wonder most people were playing pretty tight when it was 10 handed but now it goes to a 150K difference that should promote action. The jump from 4th to 3rd is only 500K when the jump from 10th to 9th was 400K, I know they wanted to pay everyone at the final table a mil but this structure just seems wrong to me.

Hand 2 - Mike Matusow has the button in seat 5, Dannenmann raises to $250,000 from under the gun, Lazar reraises to $1,250,000, and Matusow moves all in. The action is coming fast and furious here early, as these players are ready to gamble for first place.

The action is back on Dannenmann, who folds, but then Lazar quickly calls. Matusow shows pocket kings (Kc-Kh), and Lazar has pocket aces (Ah-Ad). Amazing. Matusow is gonna have to improve here.

The flop comes Kd-Qh-6h, and the crowd explodes in a cheer as Matusow makes a set to take a strong lead. Lazar needs to catch an ace or a runner-runner flush to stay alive.

The turn card is the 2h, giving Lazar a heart flush draw.and can now win with any ace or any heart. The crowd oohs and aahs at the turn of events.

The river card is the Jh, and Lazar makes a runner-runner heart flush on the river to pull victory out of the grasp of Mike Matusow, who walks off the stage, wandering around with his hands on his head. He's still alive, but he would have been the chip leader at the final table.

Here's the Card Player account:
[ QUOTE ]
Hand 15 - Scott Lazar has the button in seat 9, Matusow raises to $280,000, and Black tosses his chips on the table to call. The flop comes Jc-6c-5h, Black checks, Matusow bets $350,000, and Black immediately calls. The turn card is the 10h, Black bets out for $1,000,000, Matusow raises to $2,000,000, and Black immediately says, "All in."

Matusow stops to consider this life-or-death decision, putting his elbow on the table, and resting his head as he studies his chips and his opponent. He's very calm and collected and he carefully moves his chips into a row, and it's unclear if he's counting them out or moving them in. He stares at Black for a moment to get a reaction, and then studies the cards and all the possibilities. He reaches for his water bottle to take a drink, still studying the cards on the board. Matusow is nothing like his reputation -- he looks like his heart rate hasn't even gone up.

Matusow asks with a smile, "Do you want me to call?" Black just smiles back, and doesn't speak. Matusow puts his hands behind his chips, ready to push, but stalls, trying to get a reaction. He must not like what he sees, or he must not like what he holds, because he folds his cards.

Log: Hand 16 - Joseph Hachem has the button in seat 1, Black limps from the small blind, and Barch checks his option. The flop comes Jc-Jd-9d, and both players check. The turn card is the Js, Black checks, Barch bets $250,000, and Black calls. The river card is the 7c, Black checks, Barch bets $400,000, and Black stops to study his opponent, who is sitting right next to him. Black folds, showing a seven. Barch collects the pot, and he shows a single card -- a seven.
