Advice, is like form of nostalgia. Finding ways of bringing in the old, taking out the bad, and recycling the good for more than it's worth.. Buzz Luhrman 1997.

Before I take any advice to heart, I ask myself - does this make sense? It's that simple.

Anyways, the more I play this game the more I find that things will always change depending on the circumstance.

In one of Mason's Poker-Essays books he mentions a couple of discussions from the 2+2 forums where some really ridiculous logic was used.
I am thinking specifically of the 76s essay but there was one before it also about suited-connectors that seemed to address some pretty silly discussion on the forums.

I don't really know what all the general discussions on the limit-holdem forums were about in 1999 or 2000. But I suspect that was it is considered 'obviously correct' now was considered points of serious debate back in the day.

'Why should I cap PF with my AA? Won't that just give my hand away?'
'I don't like to raise with a drawing hand like AK.'
etc etc.

I bet these would lead to legitmate discussions back in the day but would be quickly shot down now.
I don't know this of course, but that's the impression I get from Mason's poker-essays book (I think it's the 3rd one that mentions the internet-forums discussions a couple of times).

I think the contributions of clarkmeister, dynasty, ed, BobT, etc etc have raised the level of dialogue on these forums significantly that we no longer need to debate why calling with AK pre-flop is a bad idea.

Again, I don't pretend to know any of this as fact. I only learned the rules to hold-em 18 months ago so I wasn't around before then. I'm just going based on my hunch of how these forums may have naturally progressed from the SSHE-Ed Miller-approach that has been advanced here.

Thoughts from the newcomers and old-timers on my little theory/hunch about the progression of these forums are welcome.

Sift through the archives when you get a chance. Some of the old threads are like gold. And unfortunately, the ratio of really good stuff to garbage is much more favorable.

I rarely give out long drawn out advice on hands, I find people on here on average, a lot more aggressive than me, after thousands of hands, I'm mostly on auto-pilot by now, except that I am going to move up in limit shortly and expect to run into MORE 'awake' players, then I do at the casino's low end games (4/8 and lower), although I'll be happy if I am wrong.

Getting back to eval on hands, there are so many variables that influence my decisions, that the same hand could be played many different ways, and if action wasn't taken, speculating is fun and all, but you will never know for sure what WOULD have happened.

If I concerned myself with it too much, I'd never be able to play.

bdk, the only solution, and I mean this entirely seriously, is to respond to the advice you disagree with and say "this advice sucks."

[/ QUOTE ]

Quite right too.

In my few months here, I have been a little disturbed by how infrequently I've been told that advice/thoughts I've posted are flat out wrong. I'm sure I must have said one or two really stupid things, in amongst the only partially stupid things, and not once have I been called on it.

So come on, small-stakes people! Disagree vehemently already!

Guy.

My favorite is when I post advice telling someone that they're totally wrong, and then someone else tells me that in reality my advice was totally wrong, and explains why. That rules.

BTW, I would hope that if I say something out of line when giving advice, people would tell me that my advice is wrong, and more importantly, why.

These forums are a great learning resource for that reason.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with the above 100%. If someone thinks my reply posts do not contain valid reasoning, (most of the hands I post don't contain valid reasoning - lol) I really want to know about it, as I joined this forum to improve my game, as well as possibly help a few others. I read much more than I post, and have learned quite a bit in the 5 days I've been a member, and really think this is a valuable resource.

So if you disagree with any of my posts, please feel free to let me know, but please let me know why you disagree so I can further analyze my play in the situation.

However, more grievously, there seem to be tons of new-ish posters giving straight up horrible advice to similiarly clueless posters' questions. I'll refrain from specific examples, but there are plenty on the main page right now.

I am sorry, I will try my best to improve

As another of the recent graduates, I agree completely. To me, that is the most valuable information of all. I have to believe something pretty strongly before I'll tell someone in public that they're flat out wrong. Therefore, it's probably something that I've done over and over again with at least some form of (lucky) positive reinforcement. If that thing turns out to be wrong in the long run, it'll probably end up costing me a lot, so whoever sets me straight has saved (or made) me a lot of money!

Did that make sense? (My head hurts now...)

Finally, I would be pretty embarassed to dig up my first couple of HH's that I posted on SS about a year ago (before there even was a ML forum OR a Bison converter....those were the days!!).

Nearly everyone's first hands and responses where terrible. Right now we have a big influx of new posters, so we have a big influx of strange posts.
