My thoughts, or lack thereof
When someone calls 3 cold, then all the sudden raise and cap the a flop like this one, I can only think of 6 likely holdings.
AA. 77. 66. 89, 67, AK. I wasn't afraid of AA, not that much of 89 either, but you never know. What I was afraid of was 66, 77 and 76. I thought a long time before checking the turn. I had two reasons for checking. A very likely draw just got there. The only ones I felt I had to worry about having the straight was MP3 or UTG. So if MP3 either had the straight or a set, he would bet. And if UTG indeed did have the straight, he might raise. By checking I got to see what everyone thought of their hands. Unfortunatly MP3 didn't bet. Now. I had TPTK in a big pot, and I'm suppose to do what I can to make sure that pot is pushed my way. So even if I thought I was behind to MP3, I should've bet imo. If he raise, ok, others might fold, which is fine. If he only has two pair I'm drawing very live. So, surely betting the turn must've been the best thing to do? |

Re: My thoughts, or lack thereof
I think the turn check is a good play.
If you bet out there is a good chance he is reraising, and if someone made their draw its gonna be 2 more to you when it comes back around (I would assume you would fold here but it would cost you 1 bb). If you check and MP3 bets and then it is raised, you will still fold, the only difference is it will cost you nothing to make the correct decision. Also, there isn't a fear of giving a free card here. If there were draws on the flop they got there on the turn, so the river probably won't change anything. I think betting the turn would be good if you thought you were ahead of MP3, and a non-draw helping card came off. In that instance a free card would have a better chance of hurting you. Once it is checked around, and then checked to you again on the river I think betting is good. If either of the other 2 players hit their hand on the turn and went for a check-raise, they would bet out here for sure. Anyways, this is just one man's opinion. |

Re: My thoughts, or lack thereof
FWIW I think the check on the turn was fine. Given his flat call of 3 cold and the flop action I too would be thinking 77, 66 or if he was real loose 89s or hoping for AQ.
After it is checked through on the turn I would value bet the river. Regards, ~J |

Re: My thoughts, or lack thereof
Yes. But, there's also this thing called the free card.

Re: My thoughts, or lack thereof
I addressed that. I said I don't think a free card at this point is that bad. Not many draws on the flop that are still around on the turn.

Re: My thoughts, or lack thereof
Draws, no. But possible one pair holding that can turn into two pair. But I suppose that they won't fold for one bet anyway given the action on the flop.

Re: Flame away
For the love of all things poker, bet the turn.
For the love of all things, bet the river. Peace, Joe Tall |

Re: Flame away
Yah. I thought so.
I'm too easily intimidated by weird caps behind me. Gotta work on that, fast. |

MP3 had A9s for top pair.
UTG had T9o for middle pair. MP1 had 99 for... something. My hand was good, but severly misplayed. |

Re: Flame away
The only reason I'd check the turn is that I'm going for the c/r.
