I was there too and there was no need to play by flash light. Although the lighting was poor for some seats in the 15/30 that I was at, and some guy used a lighter to see his cards ... I think he was just joking though.

Default Somethin\'s fishy about this

Before I broach this subject let me make it clear that I don't belive in big-foot, the theory of Atlantis, or pattern mapping. I've never even seen JFK .

But somethin' about this whole situation doesn't add up.

I just drove by the Bellagio and the lights are still off. Many reports are sayin' that they won't come on till Tuesday morning at the earliest.

One story estimated that MGM/Mirage corp. stands to lose about 3 million in revenue each day the doors stay closed.

Now I don't know anything about electrical systems and how all that stuff works. But I do know a little bit about money and the power it has to get things done (especially when spent in large quantities).

Las Vegas is one of the greatest cities in the most technilogically advanced country that has ever existed on earth.

Somethin' in my head doesn't accept the notion that if you told the 10 best minds in the country when it comes to this sort of thing that whichever of them can implement a plan to get the lights on within 24 hours there's a million bucks in it for them, that none of them could come up with a workable plan.

I think I remember that during the great blackout on the east coast last fall power was restored to various areas at VERY different lengths of time. It seemed like Manhatten (where all the $$$ is) was only out for less than 12 or so hours.

Mayhaps someone with some knowledge about this sort of thing could shed some "light" on the subject.

What's even more perplexing is coming up with a scenerio whereby MGM/Mirage would want to empty out the Bellagio for a few days. (successful?) theft attempt? poltergeist? immanent terrorist threat?

Mayhaps someone with a little more penchant for conspiracy theories could lend their entertaining (though usually misguided) thoughts.

Two doors down from my 3/6 game was Johnny F'ing Chan playing stud. A fellow gawker said it was 1500/3000.

I don't think any part of Manhattan had power restored in 12 hours. Several neighborhoods did not have power restored for more than 24 hours. One of the areas was the Upper East Side, which is historically the established, monied, residential part of town.

Crap happens.

Well, according to the news, thousands of feet of underground electrical cables that deliver power to Bellagio were damaged, and that takes time to fix. If it was a simple computer glitch or if some fuses were blown, I think it would almost certainly be fixed extremely quickly.

Apparently pour design came into play here to, as the primary and backup electrical lines were placed in the same conduit, meaning that it's not possible to fix the primary line without shutting off the backup system as well, which is what they did last night. I find it hard to swallow that the billions of dollars that went into designing and building this casino, they overlooked a standard design principle of decoupling your primary and backup systems.
