I met MM about 9mo ago. I have since read his book. IMHO he is an arrogant jerk and his poker is upper echelon, but far below the best of the best. The one thing I keep reminding myself of is this: He has one more bracelet than me, so, something went right. Now whether it was him or fate, who knows.

Agreed about Moneymaker, he got an insane amount of help from the cards in that tournament.

This is true of the winner pretty much every year.

I don't think it is possible for Moneymaker to be overrated.

I have never met anyone who gave moneymaker credit for anything. I am sure he is good, not amazing but good. While everyone thinks he is complete garbage. So he is under rated. Make sense? I hope so.

Who cares if Moneymaker is a good hold em player. Just give me the 2.5 million dollars! Stu Ungar was the greatest ever, but he died with 800 bucks in his pocket. I play hold em for MONEY. I do not care if I am the best. Just give me the 2.5 million dollars baby! I would rather be Moneymaker than Ungar or some of these other "pro" poker players. If Moneymaker was smart he would get the heck out of gambling now that he is a rich man.

to be overrated, one must be rated pretty high to begin with. i don't know anyone who considers moneymaker to be a top pro, so i voted "no" to the question.

cheers!

Far be it from me to judge his poker skills - way better than me, I'm sure. But I think he's been great for poker and especially great for winning players (A.K.A most 2+2ers?). IMHO he's probably one of the biggest if not THE biggest reason for the hue influx of fishes into the online games where most of us play. His internet origin, his story, and even his name made an irresistable combination. Think of how much of your online winnings are due to him. I think we all owe the guy a beer.

And yes, as others have pointed out, the only way that the most skilled player is going to win the WSOP ever again is if they also get more than their fair share of luck in the tourney.

Fossilman is a very successful player who learned starting from the bottom and working up. He did all the stuff your suppose to do: study, move up limits, analyze your leaks. He is not yet as good as the best, but he is very good and he has the kind of attitude that will only help him get even better.

He deserved his win a lot more then Moneymaker.

whenever i watch the replays of the world series of poker there are plenty of times when he gets outplayed or makes a bad call and gets lucky.

[/ QUOTE ]

How about the hundreds of his hands that weren't televised. Did you review his play of those hands?
