For instance you have KA, the board is 2kk. You're "trips" could have turned someone's "set" of 2's into a full boat and you'll probably be paying him off.

The difference is huge. An important point from Ed's newest book is that the strength of a hand is not so much related to it's rank, but how many hands beat it. With a set you may have the nuts, and if you don't you have a monster. WIth trips, you can never hold the nuts, and are much more vulnerable.
