Re: set vs. trips
Generally, in holdem a set is used to describe when you have 3 of a kind using both of your hole cards (a pocket pair), whereas trips are when you only use one of your hole cards and there is a pair on the board.

part two of my question is: "why is this distinction important?"

part two of my question is: "why is this distinction important?" [/ QUOTE ] Because there are strategical differences in how you play them. A set is very well hidden because there is no pair on the board. Trips on the other hand are more obvious to your opponents. |

Re: set vs. trips
also, if there is a pair on the board for trips, there is a possibilty of a full house, but with a set and no paired boar, no-one can have a full house.

Use the terms incorrectly and play "Find the table captain." One of my favorite B&M games.

Re: set vs. trips
A set is much stronger than trips for reasons I'm much too lazy to outline at present.

Re: set vs. trips
the problem recently is that there are many people (including pros and commentators) who are indifferent to the differences. so much so that it's led to heated debates...but everything said in this thread thus far is true.
