following 12 months of watching it on the tele.

Just noticed this part.

My sample must be very skewed because of my lifestyle, because most of the people I've associated with over the years have watched it on TV for over five years

Feel free to either disregard, or add less weight to my previous posts on the matter.

As I was typing this I tried to think of as many as I could who have stopped playing, and it's way over 20.
The good news is that if 30 start and 20 stop, it's still an improvement.
The bad news is that if people stop starting, it will go into decline.

I agree with you lorinda. I started playing with 3 of my friends about a year ago. I got better, they didn't. They quit cause they got sick of losing. That's how it goes.

Right now, more new players are coming in the front door than there are losing players exiting out the back. At some point that trend will reverse. The good players stay and the bad players leave.

There are of course exceptions. Some people's egos are too big to admit they suck at something. They will stick around and have a lifetime run of bad luck. Others are just gamblers or people who are willing to lose all the time for the occasional chance at a big score. But as a whole, people are not gluttons for punishment and will only bang their heads against a wall for so long before they pack it in.

Because we all love the game so much we can't imagine it's popularity ever waning. But believe me poker is a fad right now and fads don't last forever. It has a hip aura around it, like wine and cigar bars did a few years ago. After a while people move on to something else.

There will always be fish but they will not always be as plentiful as they are these days.

I don't think anyone is refuting that fact. I certainly am not. I am simply saying that I think these days are far ahead of us.

as long as you hve complete nobodies coming out of the woodwork and winning millions of dollars at the WSOP you will see no decline in poker, i expect to see many states in the US legalize poker halls ala California in the not so distant future as well.

I disagree with Lori on this there is a whole new range of people coming into poker even in the live enviroment the Gutshot for example has a lot of people going to it who you would not see as typical vic type regulars, the thing that stunts the growth in the UK is the lack of live games and the stigma of going to casinos.

The online boom is way from over certainly from the noises coming from the gaming industry. People you know may be turnig off but I suspect that is more down to the quality of the tv shows on offer with the majority of events shown Poker Million type one table crapshoots that from a poker playing point of view are generally poor.

There are a number of other shows going to be made in the coming months if these get shown on more mainstream tv (ie like the Party Poker million was on 5) rather than on Sky then new people will continue coming into the game.

I think there is a lot more potential for growth in the UK than there is in a more mature market like the States, but it may depend what happens to card rooms in the new regional casinos.

The problem with more and more TV coverage is that more and more people win events.

For the idle fish, the thought that poker is a game of skill is strongly in their minds with people like Helmuth (love him or hate him) winning lots of bracelets etc.

The more different winners they see, the less skillful the game appears.

The game needs heros/villains on a regular basis (LNP always invited the same people back first for this reason) and I just hope that they show some more limited series of events with the same characters each week.

For me that would be a strong move in the right direction, some kind of poker league.

There is no doubt in my mind that within two years online poker will be dominated by college kids who are colluding against each other. Talk about the ultimate online game. My son is off to college and I can tell his brain is already working things out. Good luck to your team!

Hi all

I have played the complete gambling wave with backgammon included live-tourneys. And backgammon is more or less death, around 15%-25% of the peak.

for any $ that someone win others must loose 2$

so the question is How many have "only" fun to loose any month 2-3-400$

I play to european meantime, and must say the most easy games are to US meantime

result 1 in front of a "peak" the games will be much harder

result 2 if asians with a middle income recognize that only a pokerbonus is more than a monthly income, you will see thousands that bonuswhore

result 3 if the peak happens it goes down verry fast
