Default Position

On hands 3 & 5, you are out of position, which makes waiting for the turn to raise a less attractive option. Also, on hand 3, your 2-pair will start looking like real junk if an Ace, Jack or Ten hit the turn. Pump the pot now, while you're still reasonably sure you've got the best hand and charge your opponents who are drawing at a straight. If you flat call here and then whiff on the turn checkraise attempt, it would be an utter disaster. 3-bet and lead the turn if the flop is not capped behind you.

Also, in Hand 5, there is not much deceptive value in just calling. If you go for the checkraise on the turn, there is a good chance that the preflop raiser will check it through. This would be bad.

Default I agree

I'm not coldcall from the SB w/ AJo here, unless I have a specific read that the the raiser is overly aggro preflop.

Edit: and yes, I'd probably re-raise if I did think I was facing a loose raise.

I think this is a pretty easy bet. While I'd like some reads on my opponents (passive?), you won't be checkraised often enough by the typical opponents to make betting -EV.

Also, a bet here may earn you a free card on the turn, which I'd most certainly take if the turn was checked to me and I didn't improve.

Default I agree with call in No. 1

for the reasons mentioned. I can't put my finger on the reason, but a raise here does not appear to be +EV, even if it earns me a free card when I don't improve on the turn.

not to mention poor flop play.

bet this... or if you're checking you're checking with the intention of calling and betting the turn (or popping a flop bettor who isn't the preflop raiser) your hand is dominating at this point, you don't want to raise to knock everyone out. people won't automatically give you credit for the J.

it's not a huge error to play this preflop, methinks, but you should be raising more than calling from the SB if you suspect the preflop raiser is loose (as others have said), and folding most of the time.

with the backdoor nut flush draw, I'm certainly at least calling this flop, and if BB folds any pair here to my raise, I'm happy. getting it HU also allows me to potentially take it down with a turn bet and also gives me a greater chance to win unimproved (granted that chance is very small)

I am uncomfortable with the pre-flop action on hand #5. If you were on the button instead of the SB, this would be a fold most of the time, and a re-raise otherwise. If it were suited, a call would be ok.

As it is, I think I still would prefer a fold, or a reraise if I knew CO to be a loose raiser. Anyone else?

Wow didn't notice that at first either. Page 80 seems to say muck from the SB but play from the BB. So either take the error to play the hand as a given, or move your position to the big blind.

I'm talking about preflop, in case you were wondering.
