You don't bet the flop for information. You bet it to protect your hand. What am I missing?

That is what I was suggesting, but it was secondary to the primary reasons for raising.

Even as a probe, it does not necessarily have to be a check-raise. I get your point, however, in some games you would still probably get 3 or 4 callers and not know anymore than you did before. On the other hand, if you only get 1 or 2 callers, that can be helpful information if you know anything about the players. Again, this is all secondary.
