A set is trips.

I think a set refers specifically to when you have a pocket pair and only your third card is on the board, doesn't it?

Whereas trips refers to any three of a kind whether two of the cards are on the board or in your hand.

That's how i've always understood it anyway.

Yea I'm pretty sure you're right. When he said Rodman flopped a set of Q's I thought he had pocket queens and hit his Q on the flop, but no, he only flopped trips.

Some people differentiate between a set (where you have a pocket pair) and trips (where the pair is on the board). I would have less trouble folding trips than a set.

The other poster---me---is guilty as charged. I've heard too many poker announcers, who admittedly aren't always the brightest of the bunch, use "trips" and "set" interchangeably. From now on, I promise to listen only to Howard Lederer, since I'm sure he would never make such an elementary mistake.

He had a Q with a small kicker. The flop was QQK. The other player bet about 1000 in a pot that had about 2000 in it. She had K with a decent kicker. He didn't even spend time thinking about it. She bet and he folded.

[/ QUOTE ]

Given his questionable plays, who knows what Rodman was thinking. But my read on his play was that he folded because the bettor was a woman.

Only people who know what they're talking about.

Alright guys, let me have it. How about a set and trips are both three of a kind. Great.

I watched the whole show and up to the the point when he
folded the 3 Q's I was on the fence how good he was.
One thing for sure none of his opponents had a read on him.

Yes he did get good cards, which is bound to happen
more often when you play in many pots.
But he didn't simply play every hand to the river.
When he folded the Q's I though,
yes he really dosn't have a clue......

But then again I came up with the same point that you
mentioned. He wanted to keep the girl in the game because
it was more fun for him. It wasn't like he was playing
for big bucks of cash out of his pocket.
Additionally think about who Dennis Rodman is, Dennis is
about supprise, throwing a curve ball, I bet if he had
Quad Queen's on that same hand he still would have folded.
That hand was his oportunity to be Dennis for the cameras.

Maybe he thought he had a J the whole time. I would like
to go watch it again and see if he looked at his cards more
than once.

Yes he did get lucky on a lot of hands but he did buy his
share of pots by playing aggressive also. I sure would love
to see all the hands that were not shown.
