Default Ax on the button late in a multi

Hi,

I recently (mis)played a hand in a 500FPP satelite on stars. We were down to 22, top 9 get a seat for the $250k.
I have 8k in chips and I am on the button. Everyone fold to me and I have A4o. I decide to get the blind and raise $3k (blinds were 600 if I remember). SB fold, BB think and push his remaining 8k. I have now half my chips in the pot. Folding isn't great so I decided to call. He turned A8 and caught a 8 on the flop. I was out in 22th.

Was my steal attempt good at this point with a hand like A4 ? Should I do that with a better kicker only ? was the call of his reraise good considering my stacks and how much I am involved in the pot or should I have fold ?
Perhaps I should have go allin preflop and not bet 3k only. If i go allin, is a call from BB with A8 good ?

Regarding his all in, you have to fold to that. You're beat more than the pot odds are laying you (IMHO).

I think I'd have to have better than A4 to put down just 3k. That said, it depends on how aggressive you are. I think the odds though would say he most likely would have laid down that hand if you had pushed.

If you only have 8k raising to 3k is too much. You are risking to big a portion of your stack there to then fold. If you want to raise with a weak A go for it but just move all-in, don't raise almost half your stack.

agreed, raise about 1.8k or push in. The 3k raise was too high for A4o with your stack of 8k. Also you have to lay that hand down to a push by the BB.

I can't imagine a worse way to play it.

You waaaaay overbet in an obvious steal position with a hand that cannot withstand a raise. Then you called that very raise?!?

If the blinds were T600, I would have made it T1500 to go. If he comes over the top, I fold faster than France in a major war.

i couldn't agree more. 2.5x BB raise is plenty when blinds are this high. if they are going to fold to T1800, they will do the same to T1500. this also saves you money when they come over the top. an overbet here turned into utter disaster...staking your entire tourney on A4offsuit...baaad!

cheers!
