Default Bet when the flush hits?

In the past several days, I've seen a lot of replies admonishing people for not betting when the flush card hits the river because (paraphrasing) "It's more likely that the flush isn't out there than it is". Are we really gaining more bets from value betting than we're losing from betting into a rivered flush?

Party .5/1 (sorry, my e-mail is down so I can't get the HH to put into the converter, and I'd like to get this posted while it's fresh in my mind). This is my first hand at the table, but it seems about average, maybe a shade tight.

Hero has A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] in the BB. UTG folds, UTG+1 folds. MP1 calls, MP2 folds, CO calls, Button calls, SB calls, Hero checks (side note - who raises here? With less limpers I be more apt to raise)

Flop 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. SB checks, Hero bets (no guarantee anyone would bet, so I didn't give a c/r much of a chance of succeeding). MP1 folds, CO calls, Button raises, SB folds, Hero 3-bets, CO calls, Button calls.

Turn 6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img][8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]]. Hero bets, CO calls, Button calls.

River 3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img][6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]]. Here's where I remember all of the posts about betting even though the flush card came and two opponents' action can easily be read as flush draws. Hero bets, CO raises, Button folds, Hero calls.

Results in white:

CO shows 7d6d for flush, A high
Hero doesn't show AcQc for pair of Aces
CO wins 13.25 BB

Thanks,
-David

Default Re: Bet when the flush hits?

Raise pf.

In this situation I would probably check/call the river. There were a good amount of people to see the flop and there are absolutely no draws possible except the diamond flush on the flop.

*Waves hands in the air* ohh, ohh, me!

You're suited in a multi-pot, dominated by AK, AA, KK and QQ and they don't look like they showed up for the party. Raise to punish trash hands, dominated hands and baby pocket pairs. Your raise also establishes strength that *might* help you take down the pot later by encouraging a poor laydown from a weak player when your top pair hits.
