I think you played this hand way too passively. If he check calls on the flop, he probably has you beat (I would put him on queens). This means you know you can't take your hand to a showdown, and need to bet him out of the pot. I would make a good sized bet on the turn (about the size of the pot), and then reassess your situation on the river, probably making another pot sized bet. His check call on the flop makes me think he has a hand that he would lay down. It's much better to lose your money making a play and trying to win the pot than to call your money away, because i doubt you have him beat.
