Default This forum needs some debate

Don't worry, this isn't another, "What's wrong with this forum" post. Instead, it's a "How to improve this forum and your play" post.

The best way to learn, in my opinion, is to debate. Make an argument and defend it. There is no debate here anymore. Hands gets posted, 10 poeple post their opinions, and everyone moves on. In order to get the most out of the forum, and yourself, you need to challenge people when you think they are wrong and be ready to defend your ideas when you are challenged.

In the last week I've made several posts that disagreed with the majority of opinions in a thread, yet no one has questioned me. Heck, the majority of my posts here don't even get replies, not even from the person who started the thread. I find that very frustrating.

I don't for a second believe that my arguments are so convincing that everyone simply changes their mind to agree with my opinion. So what is it? Are people afraid to disagree and be wrong? If so, you're never going to learn anything that way. I've learned the most from threads where I said something really stupid, debated it, and was convinced (not just accepted) that I was wrong.

So lets have some debate. If you think someone is wrong, it doesn't matter who, say so. Everyone will learn more in the process.

I agree. I actually got into a decent debate with "TheDude" in this thread , earlier today and was hoping for more responses. Thanks for the opportunity for me to put in a shameless bump without having actually bump the thread

I here ya JTG. Your point is right on the mark. The best wat to learn is to understand WHY you are right or wrong about a subject.

There's an old axiom that says something along the lines of "the best way to learn something is to teach it." The concept of "defending your opinion" falls righ in line with this concept.

The trick in a debate (where you are trying to learn) is to listen to the opposition with objective ears. If you defend your position without considering that you may be wrong, you won't learn. Don't back down just because someone disagrees, but be willing to learn from opposing opinions.

Sometimes "debates" in these forums go on and on and on with no real point after a while and sometimes they just get buried by all the rest of the regular nonsense.

Let's hope they get back to pointed discussions that stay on top.

No it isn't.

But seriously, I agree with you. I often post things that I think people will disagree with, but they get no responses.

The problem is that we need to be willing debate everything - even things like raising jacks out of the blinds which we have already beat to death. Whenever someone brings up one of these old debates they are quickly told to shut up. That stifles debate in general.

There was some here...that I totally sallyied out on.

Some more articles for debate:

I contend that the worst thing ever to happen during the upgrade was the lack of emails for responses to indivdual posts.

I also think ARod will bat .280 this year w/32 HRs.

I think that all Yankee fans that are not from NY are weak little children deep down inside.

I like the DH.

I think in the long run Stienbrenner is good for Baseball.

Do you think I should buy this car. I love the suicide doors.:

1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible

Or this Car (she is a beaut):

1967 Plymouth Sport Fury

Peace,

I've never really understood that theory. I prefer to learn from other people mistakes instead of my own.
