Default All in being big stack vs big stack mid game

Party poker's SNG 10+1

I personally hate goin all in with someone of equal stack - especially a big stack like myself. The blinds were 100 or so I had 1500, 3rd place. First had around 2000.
There were 2 short stacks with around 500.

The guy was on the blind, I raise 300 with AK he comes all in. He's made 2 all ins in the last 3 rounds.

I put him on a with big kicker, so I called. He turned up pair 8s.

Never mind the board, I lost. Was this unavoidable?
