Blackjack is an easy game to play if you know the basic strategie. And when you know how to count cards it gets even better. But here in Holland the casinos have card shuffeling machines so counting cards doesn't work anymore.
I was wondering if this is happening in the US as well. Laterzzzzz ARTMAN |

Shufflers are here too, but that is the least of the worries. In a couple of years "smart" tables, once again a trend driven by Shufflemaster will become widespread. These can size up your play in about 20-25 hands and are extremely accurate since they know which cards are on the table. From your betting patterns it can often even name the major counting system you appear to be using and how good your play is on that system. These are why I say card counting is dying off, more so than shuffling machines. Shufflers that only shuffle the deck doesn't affect the game too much, but the constant shufflers would kill off counting. Those games though are not as popular. People like to feel momentum and a lot of players say the constant shufflers make it hard to win a lot of hands in a row. Simple myth of course, but myths drive business trends.

Do I miss 1982. Those were the last of blackjack's glory days. When you could count and win. I was a student at Cal-Berkeley, and I would head to Tahoe and Reno and the single-deck games for weekend ups and downs. Never mind sleep or anything else.
I remember one overnight trip and coming out of the casino early in the morning to a fresh snowfall. I think Ken Uston ruined it with his lawsuits, but the progress of technology was inevitable. |

What about blackjack "teams" like the one(s) from MIT that book is about? I'm sure casinos are a lot more clued in now that there's a book about it, but it still seems relatively possible if done correctly. Do casinos now-adays not let you sit at a table until there's a new shoe? I know they re-shuffle more often which hurts, but some edge could be found.

The smart tables are pretty amazing. I checked out a couple of different versions at the Gaming Convention the other month and was pretty impressed. Its a matter of time before they are everywhere.

But, I haven't seen too many (any?) places that make you wait for a new shoe in six and eight deck games. Maybe at higher limits they have this rule for 6/8 deckers? |
