What live game limit and vegas casino with this bankroll?
Howdy all, I have a little over $2000 bankroll for texas hold'em poker and I live in vegas... I am unemployed so time is not a problem... except I am definitely, NOT a morning person, if that info matters. 8)
What limit would you go with, which casino(s), and why? [note Nevada Palace no longer has a regular poker room ] Looking for reasonable rakes and perks as part of the reason to choose one over another, I suppose, as well as spread limits. Any suggestions appreciated! I am not exactly a beginner, but this seemed like the best place to ask. -t |

I wouldn't go higher than $3/6 to start- 300 BB might be adequate to handle swings. Of course you run into bigger variance and bad rakes...

I would play on the interent, it should be far more profitable and you will gain experience more rapidly, allowing you to both develop the skills to play middle limits and build a bankroll for those middle limit games in a more expeditious fashion.

Re: What live game limit and vegas casino with this bankroll?
With $2000 in Vegas I would look for a 3/6 game or 5/10 game. I wouldn't care about perks. I would play where the most tourists play, like the Mirage & Bellagio. Maybe even Binion's. Some of the smaller rooms have lots of locals who play fairly tight and with each other every day. The places that run small tourneys seem to have a regular following.
Why spread limit? I've only seen this in the small rooms filled with locals who play this game every day, like the Orleans. If you are not used to it you will be at a disadvantage. Some of the really small rooms have few regulars and can be very easy to beat. Circus Circus was like that. But there is usually one or two games, if that, so I would only do that on short money (meaning I was desperate). Stick with holdem and stay away from no-ante stud. The regulars in this game don't put very much money in the pot. Good luck. |

By spread limits, I just meant generically what limits were available there.
Thanks for the advice, I am a bit paranoid about the rake swallowing profits, any casinos left only charging 5% in Las Vegas at these lower limits? I'm likely to dabble in Omaha Hi Only as well, Texas Station is only place I am aware that has this game as it's main attraction, for regular play and tournaments, know any others? -t |

But then you'd be running into the same problem of playing the regulars in their game of choice. Better to look for the tourists who've seen holdem on TV and think they're gonna be the next WPT champion.
After you've built a bankroll it would be a lot safer to try other games against better opponents. $2000 can disappear pretty quickly in tough games. Also, the bigger rooms have more choice of games. |

Re: What live game limit and vegas casino with this bankroll?
Over-all, find games with small blinds (such as the 4-8-8 with a 1-2 blinds, or a straight $6 games with a single $2 bind) and play a little tighter than 2+2 suggests.
Bankroll issues are usefull only to either stop you from playing at a limit that you expect to beat in the long run but cannot take a chance on getting unlucky; or to provide guidance in avoiding situations that are slightly favorable EV but big varience. This only applied if going broke is a "disaster", whatever that means for you. Notice that the size of your bankroll is of no consequence if you are an underdog in a game: beginners shouln't play 10/20, no matter how big their bankroll, if they are trying to make money. A $2000 bankroll is very small if the above applies to you. You need to find the smallest game with the smallest blinds, develop skills and experience and confidence and trust that you are actually a winning player. Then work your way up. If you have only $2000 to your name and must get a job if you lose it and must pay rent and eat, and you are a beginner, then "professional poker" is not for you at this time. Get a job that pays your "nut" (minimum expenses), minimize your expenses (don't go on vacation, ride the bike to work, eat it up at the comped Buffet), then play to work up a real bankroll and actual skills. If you are retired and the wife takes the SS and you can "play" with your $2000 but may be able to snag an additional $300 every month, then you should be able to play up to $5/10 so long as you are a favorite. - Louie |

Thanks for that Louie!
I can say that I am not a beginner, and am reading poker books, own 2 Turbo Hold'em titles, and am very serious about my playing... I do not call with 7s3h type garbage, but hope everyone else does. 8) I'll be spreadsheeting my wins and loses and taking mental notes of each player and evaluating my own play as well... and working hard on my patience and ability to ignore the suckouts that are bound to happen, without going on TILT. I was an excellent bowler, so I have the ability to adjust to changing conditions. -t |
