Default Should I have given this hand up?

6 player table, UB, $1/$2. I'm in the big blind with 89o. 2 seats to my left is a maniac who calls. The button also calls. I check. Flop: 567, giving me the nut straight. I check, maniac raises, button calls, I raise, both call. Turn: 7(567). I check, hoping to induce a bluff from the maniac. Sure enough, he raises. Button calls, I reraise, both call. River: 7(5677). I let out a cry of anguish that nobody hears. I check, maniac raises, button folds, I lay it down. Was this the right move? Too weak? It was only another $2 in a pot that was over $20. On this particular night, the maniac had literally completed every hand against me. Whether it was the set he hit on the river after raising (not even calling) with a buried pair with 2 overcards on the flop which gave me top two pair or his raising on gut shots on the turn and completing them. I was trying to stay disciplined here... I couldn't see how he didnt have a full house, but he did bluff many times (without success). Any thoughts are appreciated.

Its amazing how many times that you just know its impossible for you to win on the river, and you call, and actually do win. I believe its almost always a mistake to fold the river to a single bet in a large pot when you have almost any hand, especially when the bet is from a maniac. Remember, in that scenario, you only have to be right 1 outta 10 times to turn a profit.

How does the maniac keep raising your checks? Were you betting or was he?

I thought it was clear:

Flop: I checkraise.
Turn: I checkraise.
River: I checkfold.

Argh. I wish I had called... Knowing would've been worth the 2 bucks...

Apparantly you either don't understand the word raise or the word check. A check can't be raised.

If he's truely a maniac, he may very well be betting with A high or less. After the button folds I think you have an easy call.
