My Rating of Authors on RGP
Just to clarify for those who read that post. I named several authors who I thought could make as much as 100K a year playing ring game limit holdem and who couldn't. That opinion was not based solely on their writings. In many cases I was using my knowledge of their actual play.

I would guess you haven't played much with Carson as you don't play a lot of 6/12 any more?

Re: PokerBabe, check the link in my original post
I did not actually rank them. Rather I guessed that those who could make 100K a year, if their life depended on it, (by playing 60-120 or samaller, ring game holdem) included, me, Mason, Ray, Feeney, Brunson, Brier, Cooke, and maybe Krieger. Those who couldn't, at ring game holdem that is, included Ciaffone, Caro, Carson, Hellmuth, Jones, McEvoy, and Warren. Again that was sometimes based on more than just their writing.

Re: My Rating of Authors - David\'s Last Post - here it is.
For all those who want to avoid the hassle of the link posted by Easy E, the following quote is a cut and paste of David's "last post at RPG". So this answers the "author's question".
[ QUOTE ] My partners feel that given our large ad revenue (that I share in) , on our own forum, it is not appropriate that I get involved in discussions here. I am honoring that request. It has nothing to do with the people or the words written here. If there is a thread on rgp that I believe demands my attention, I will post an advisory here that I have addressed it on twoplustwo. Most of my strategy advice has always been on that forum anyway. Tying up a couple of loose ends: The lowball question in my tournament book is not flawed. You stand pat with the king and bet if you are checked to. This wins you the pot more often than by drawing, against most players. As to the question of how good writers must play if their work is to be taken seriously I say this: There are a couple of hundred people out there who could grind out 100K a year playing ring game 10-20 through 60-120. Assuming they were playing their best. I am one of them. If we are talking holdem, others are Mason Malmuth, Ray Zee, John Feeney, Doyle Brunson, Roy Cooke, Jim Brier, and probably Lou Krieger. I have my doubts about Bob Ciaffone, Mike Caro, Gary Carson, Phil Hellmuth, Lee Jones, Tom McEvoy, and of course Ken Warren and his ilk. All these guys have shown to be confused aboout some aspect of holdem , although I think some of them would beat the game. But not for 100K a year in middle size full ring games. Beating small games, very big games, or shorthanded games are attributes that do not translate into the the ability to teach the majority of poker players what they want to know. Namely how to beat medium size day to day ring games. I believe I can do that as well as any poker player alive (if I was disguised). I have named those writers who I think are in my league in that category snd some who I think are not. Those who are not will often write stuff that is wrong and give you advice that will cost you money. If you can distinguish the bad advice from the good advice in their books, it is worth reading them. Anything else I have to say will be said on Two Plus Two. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: My Rating of Authors - David\'s Last Post - here it is.
So there is no misunderstanding my "edit" of David's last post was to change the subject title, and to make paragraphs in the text, as the cut and paste came out blocky. No words were changed.

Re: PokerBabe, check the link in my original post
Mr. Sklansky,
I assume that your opinion of Bob Ciaffone in regards to pot-limit hold'em play is different than limit hold'em play. A clear statement about this would be appreciated. -Zeno |
