Heads-up session at a room in San Jose. I'm pretty sure what Tommy was holding - it was a Martin J-40. I had a Regal R-35 dobro.
I bet "Faraway Eyes" but Tommy raised to "Dead Flowers". We played that one to the river. Tommy bet "Hide Your Love Away" and I called. That one went to the river and was so exciting that I called my younger son out to see it replayed. Last hand of the night was "Peaceful Easy Feeling"; the turn was a rocking dobro solo. Amazing thing about non-zero-sum games. We split the pot, but both of us won

If Tommy had my '64 D-28, back when they were made of Brazillian rosewood, he'd have blown you out of the water.
However, If you countered with a 1930's Triolian (roundback, that is), the pot would have been yours. Sigh...I used to own so many cool vintage guitars. Now I'm down to a mere 3. Nothing beats good old vintage guitars after they've been broken in and the wood aged to perfection. |

Just bought my daughter a new guitar. Didn't realize how lucky I was to get away with only spending $1200 'til I googled the Martin J-40.
I have no doubt the pot was split. I await Tommy's post for further elaboration. |

Lee told me that a Dobro in the right hands sounds like butter.
Lee, I gotta tell you. You are pretty smooth on that thing. I drove home filled with thoughts of top grade margarine. luv, Tommy |

Just because it's so off the wall, I want to share the reason I was at Lee's house. My drums were there, on permaloan, and I went to pick them up for this gig I got coming up.
I've gigged on drums outside in the snow. I've played with my cymbal stands inch high in horsedung. I've played in the smallest dives, and in front of tens of thousands at stadiums. Just when I thought I had done it all, along comes this. I was asked to play drums in a band at the Fourth of July parade in Aptos California, on a float. The theme of the float is The Beach Boys. The band will all be lipsinking or airplaying along with recording music. Except for me. I have permission and clearance to bang on the drums all day. The pay is zero, which isn't all that much less than normal. We'll be doing three songs, over and over, for an hour and a half. The booze is free, and I'm going to need a lot. Tommy |
