Biblical murder & rape

I was just wondering what Christians and Jews on this forum think about murder and rape in the bible, especially those acts committed or sanctioned by "god."

I assume most will "interpret" away these passages and/or blame Adam's dietary choices. I am just curious -- though I think the "god" described in the bible is hideously evil, that's not the fundamental reason why I am an atheist.
