New to Omaha
Hey all - I'd consider myself an advanced hold'em player, but am just starting to learn Omaha and Omaha/8. I'm learning its better to have a high/low combo hand when playing O8, but I have a question about reading boards.
The other day I was playing a small tourney and I held 996K in omaha high. I was in the BB and saw a "free" flop. Anyway, the hand played out checking all around with a board of A-Q-J-7-10. Playing hold'em I quickly thought I had the nut straight and bet my hand. I was called by a guy who held 10-9-2-3 who won the pot with a pair of 10s. Can someone explain this to me. I understand that you have to use 2 hole cards in your hand in coordination with the board, but am not 100% certain why my K wouldn't play. I'm assuming that my high was 99? Thanks!! |

Re: New to Omaha
Welcome to LO8 - simple answer that I missed when I was starting.
You COULD use the K . . . and what OTHER card would you use. Remember - 2 cards - exactly 2 cards. not 1, not 3. 2 you could use a 9K or a 6K but both would bump one of those pretty other str8 cards wouldn't it. Don't sorry - everybody goes through this and pretty soon you will see things. I have played a couple thousand hands now and it took 1000 before I stopped trying to make hands that were not there. There is more to this game then you think. |

Re: New to Omaha
I had to look at it like 8 times--probably why I lose at Omaha.

Re: New to Omaha
Are you sure you didn't misread his hand, or the final outcome of the hand?
You have a king high straight, vs his pair. are you sure that it wasnt some other holding he had? Even if he was in the SB, T923 is a bit of a weak call. Are you sure it wasnt KT23? Something that would infact give him an ace high straight? If this was live, I can see how it could be misread, and the pot awarded to the wrong person, especially if you claimed to have broadway when you did not. No one will notice the 9 for the King high straight if you announce broadway, but its busted on your misread of your hand. This happens alot in home games with many people how are not familiar with hand reading of omaha. Hell it happens in casinos too with dealers not paying much attention. |

Re: New to Omaha
Highly unlikely scenario: You have a K-to-9 straight and the pot was improperly rewarded. Contact customer service and give em hell.
Most likely scenario: You've relayed some information incorrectly [ QUOTE ] If this was live, I can see how it could be misread, and the pot awarded to the wrong person, especially if you claimed to have broadway when you did not. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, i was thinking the same thing. If it's online though he just read his hand/the other hand/ or the board wrong |

No one will notice the 9 for the King high straight [/ QUOTE ] I sure didn't! online software would catch it (God I hope). I would suck at LIVE play. I can't use my fingers to keep track of the cards. |

Re: New to Omaha
At any casino table in Los Angeles, I cannot imagine the players not spotting the K high straight right away, regardless of whether it was miscalled. |

The part I think I like best about it so far is the line "Don't sorry". But I'm not sure... I think I need to read it another dozen times. Are you French, by chance? |
