AK against Mr. Random
I've been at this table a couple of minutes. It's a tight passive table for .25/.50. I've won many hands uncontested and showed down some winners, particularly against the BB in this hand. He's the loosest at the table by far and really quite random postflop. I've seen him call down with bottom pair, call to the river and then let it go, and reraise me on ragged flops/turns only to call down and be beat by my top pair. He likes hands like Q9o.
Prima so doing this one by hand: Hero is UTG A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] folded around to BB who calls. Flop (4 SB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls 6[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] BB checks, Hero bets... |

Re: AK against Mr. Random
Check behind. This is a drawless board (the only draws being JT, J9, T9 which all got there on the turn). He's either going to call and beat you with his pair or fold his worse hand.

GRUNCHING
I think I have to check behind him on the river. Maybe I'm just being weak tight. |

Re: AK against Mr. Random
this is precisely the player against whom you check behind. he either called you down with any part of the board or any semblance of a draw hoping to connect with the board. he will rarely call you with a worse hand, and he will never fold a better one.

Re: AK against Mr. Random
I've been reading too many value bet on river posts, but you're right, this is obviously not a value bet. :/

Re: AK against Mr. Random
Yup.
Legitimate strategy; wrong opponent. In fact, if this guy is a calling station (which is pretty much what your description said), you might even check the turn. It's not the way you'd want to play the hand against a good player. But you've pegged him pretty precisely, and you'll get much better chances to take his money when you've got TP and he's got middle pair. |

Yep, I realized it too late.
BB shows K3o. |

Re: AK against Mr. Random
You beat weak calling stations by hammering them with your good hands. If you had AQ instead, you'd be value betting this board all day long and moran with bottom pair is going to be happy to call you down and hope you don't have a pair. I think this was mentioned in SSHE in some form but I'm too lazy to check.
