Stud/8 Getting back to basics - is this a hand you play?
I am still trying to develop my stud/8 game, and I having been reestablishing the basics to myself (i.e. rereading Zee's book). I ran into this situation recently wasn't sure there was a clear "correct" play.
Site: PartyPoker 10/20 7 Card Stud/8 -- Hand Converter Third Street Seat 1: xx xx 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]_____folds Seat 2: xx xx K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]_____calls Seat 3: xx xx T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]_____folds Seat 4: xx xx Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]_____folds Seat 6: xx xx 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]_____completes Seat 7: xx xx 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]_____folds Hero: 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]_____brings-in_____[??????] Seat 7 was on a relatively short stack, but otherwise I had no read on him. I assume Seat 2 is playing a pair of kings, which means I'm a huge dog for the high end. I'm never excited about a 7 low, particularly when there's no str8 or flush chances, but here another apparent 7 low is raising.... hmmmmmm... thoughts? |

call and push seat 6 around on 4th if you hit. even if he seems to catch good, i'd still jam 4th.

Re: Getting back to basics - is this a hand you play?
because your draw to a 7 low is almost certainly better, and even if not, if you catch somethin like a 4, you've got still got a much more threatening board to him and you can take control of this hand. this also shuts the king outta the hand a bit. i wouldn't be surprised if he folded 4th or 5th. it also sets may set you up to take a free card if necessary (though I doubt it at these stakes. works at 5/10 every now and then though)
note that i'm a huge lag though |

I'd call, but given how much money I've donated to you in this game I'm not so sure its a great idea anymore :0) You're playing for half the pot and really don't have that great an edge over seat 6. Although since the 7 is concealed and you're the bringin I'd probably talk myself into calling.

Said---seat 6 is on a realitively short stack--- I assume this means that he will be all in before the end if there's much betting. He's probably not going anywhere unless he catches pretty bad,and you have no shot on the high end. I don't like it. I fold.

I usually muck this myself. With a tight structure like 10-20 I would wait for a better chance. If the game has a lot looser structure than I don't mind it as much

You put seat 2 on a pair of K's with only a call to the bring-in? I'd put him a concealed middle pair with the K kicker or some type of drawing hand (straight/flush). |

because your draw to a 7 low is almost certainly better [/ QUOTE ] Is this true? starting 7 lows that I can think of: 1 : 7-6-5 2 : 7-6-4 3 : 7-6-3 4 : 7-6-2 5 : 7-6-A 6 : 7-5-4 7 : 7-5-3 8 : 7-5-2 9 : 7-5-A 10 : 7-4-3 11 : 7-4-2 12 : 7-4-A 13 : 7-3-2 14 : 7-3-A 15 : 7-2-A So I have hand #11, which means that there are 4 other better low draws. 4/15 = 1/5 = 26% chance he's got a better low draw than I do. I don't think I'd call my hand "almost certainly" better. Nevertheless, even assuming I'm a relative favorite on the low end (which could easily change with a brick on 4th) I think the real question is whether this is a hand I want to use to battle for what will likely be only half the pot? I'm not convinced that it is. If I'm going to shoot for only half the pot, I would think I'd want something stronger than a possible 7 low. Too many things would have to happen on 4th: I need to hit another baby that doesn't pair me AND seat 6 has catch a brick. Even if that happens, I'd still need to complete my low on a later street, and the Ks will likely charge me maximally to try to do so. I think that may be too much uncertainty to battle for only 1/2 the pot. Other thoughts or responses? |

My problem would be getting sucked in at later rounds. |
