playing on the bubble with an aggressive big stack behind you???
hey there
ok i just played one of the most frustrating stt's ever. not because of bad beats or anything, but because i felt useless because of a very good aggressive big stack. Situation. prima round 5 550 +50 buy-in 1st = $3000, 2nd = $1200, 3rd = $800, 4th = 500 5 left Hero 4200 Player 1 250 Player 2 5850 Player 3 1200 Player 4 1500 Blinds 100/200 Player 3 and 4 folds Hero raises 600 with Jc Js player 1 folds player 2 raises to 2000 hero folds Should i have just called here and not raised or even folded or do i take the big stack on? Later on.... Hero = 2400 Player 2 = 7000 Player 3 = 1200 player 4 = 2200 Essentially from this point on big stack who had worked his stack incredibly well, would not let me play a single hand. I was getting borderline hands like A9o KQs etc. and 4 handed i felt these had to be played/raised. But the big stack would not let me play a hand. The other 2 players also could wait for the big stack to act and were attacking my blinds savagely. How do i act? Do i tighten up extremely? Do i decide to take a stand I felt that any raise i made was going to get re-raised and so to steal i had to go all-in. Any thoughts/ help much appreciated as for the first time in a while i felt helpless and completely lost for ideas. I really dont want this to happen again.

First hand: The equity that you gain by folding when there is a stack that short right behind you is enormous. Folding the JJ there is perfect.
Second situation: Start pushing with the A9o etc. . .

Hand 1. I think JJ is too good here, especially 5-handed, especially with a read of aggression.
Hand 2: Confrontations are bad, but not that bad. If you've got AQ and Villain pushes any 2, you need to call.

[/ QUOTE ] The small stack has 1.25 BB, you don't think it's better to fold when your on the bubble facing a stack that is looking to bust you?

[/ QUOTE ] Im sorry man, but I think the JJ hand was a repush. A good big stack would be doing that with a WIDE range of hands, mainly because of the small stack about to bust out. Because of the payout structure, playing for first is paramount, and 2000 chips + 600 + 300 is a substantial amount of the chips in play. Screw the fact that its bubble time. You go for the win here.

That's what I was saying, openpushing with 20x BB is just bad, but I really like 3-bet pushing there, especially if you've got a read that this guy's good already.
Yeah, of course you want to live, but if he's got 1.25x BB, you've got 2.5x BB. A double up really pins down third place, helps you lock up second, as well as keep you going for first. In the BB, there's no way in hell you can laydown AQ to an any 2 push from Villain. Survival is always good, but you also have to figure out what you need to get third or second, and that means taking 65/35 chances to win. And I can't believe I forgot payouts. You need to play for first in this spot, where first gets a huge lion's share of the prize.
