A Bible poll
From several other threads it appears we have many intelligent and reasonable posters who actually take the Bible at its word - both Old and New Testaments.
Personally, I find it hard to accept that an intelligent person would accept stories like 'Adam and Eve', 'Job', 'Lot', 'The Dude Who Lived in a Whale' 'Samson', etc. etc. as fact. I mean, 'HELLO?' So, here's a poll to see just how endemic this is |

Do you accept the Bible as FACT? [/ QUOTE ] The Bible is a book. To describe the Bible as "fact" or "fiction" is utterly absurd. |

None are categorized as "fact." I guess you brought up the important part..the Bible is 66 books..so it makes no sense to call the whole thing "fact" or "fiction." This would make as much sense as calling a stamp collection "fiction." A proper poll would be "Do you believe Genesis is fiction?" |

Re: A Bible poll
I assumed you meant the word "Fact" in a figuratively symbolic and mythically allegorical sense.

Re: A Bible poll
Pedantry aside ... obviously the question is intended to illicit opinions on the nature of the stories of the books in the Bible - both Old and New Testaments.
For example, if you believe that the story of Job is a recounting of actual occurrences then I would find it hard to accept that you believe that the story of Lot is not a recounting of actual occurrences, but is, rather, a parable type lesson story. Also, I am interested in seeing how the clearly different styles of the Old and New Testaments lend themselves to credence. For example, it is far easier to believe that an actual man - Jesus - was here and did what he did, miracles and all, because of the way it is reported in the New Testament than to believe that the whole Moses story is a faithful recounting because of the way that is reported. Also, one might believe the general message(s) of the New Testament, but find the book of Revelations a bit ridiculous. Etc. Etc. ... debate. |

A Few Facts About the Bible
"Also, I am interested in seeing how the clearly different styles of the Old and New Testaments lend themselves to credence. Just a few notes on the Bible: No archaelogical discovery has ever contradicted a Biblical reference. The Bible was written by over 40 authors from just about every walk of life. The 66 Books were written over a 1500 year span in three languages on three continents. The Bible has one theme and no contradictions. (For those who think there are contradictions, most can be reasonably explained by studying the context and language of the orginal translations. We can discuss this in another thread if anyone is interested.) The Bible contains hundreds of detailed prophesies which were later fulfilled to 100% accuracy. The Bible has been persecuted for hundreds of years. Kings and dictators have made owning a copy of it illegal and made repeated attempts to destroy it completely. Yet, not only does it remain, it remains a best seller. |
