Default Mind is a \"Tabula Rasa\"

If we could discuss the idea that the mind is a "Tabula Rasa" or "blank at birth".

Some modern psychologists would argue that "it is" and therefore a person can be conditioned for any and all of his considerations in life.I am particularly interested in this aspect but know that other considerations are evident which includes the nature of the mind.

Thank you,
carlo

It seems that this has been addressed only obliquely. I believe there are many perspectives to this matter but if no interest,it's ok-i can let it die the death.

carlo

Steven Pinker wrote a whole book about this, and I'd wager he's far more informed about the topic than any of us.

For the record, I believe the current view in science is that the tabula rasa theory is BS - it is argued that who we are is a mixture of genetics, strong environmental concerns (i.e. having particularly abusive or nuturing parents, having a mentor, or growing up next to a leaky nuclear power plant), and partly (and you're not going to like this) "combinatorial randomness". That is, you see an army brochure in your guidance counselor's office when you're talking to him about colleges, pick it up, decide to go to the army, boom your life has taken a completely different direction thanks to nothing more than the fact that a brochure initially caught your eye, that sort of thing.

Definitely not a blank slate, though.

As I was waiting to order at the Terriaki Chicken place - they have brown rice - the lady in front of me had a baby who I noticed was staring in amazement at the colors of the CocaCola softdrink display. I thought to myself, there's a future lifelong customer for CocaCola.

I'm pretty sure some of the regular posters in this forum have demonstrated that they possess a tabula sola semiplenus.
