Default Bertuzzi reinstated back in the NHL

About dang time!

I know Moore is still injured but I think he's cried enough about his sorry ass. I read the entire report by Bettman and I think he fairly weighed all the factors in making his decision to return Bertuzzi to the NHL.

Now the Canucks are going to kick some serious ass. We have out 1st line intact with Morrison, Naslund and Bertuzzi, a solid 2nd line of the Sedins and Linden and rough checking 3rd and 4th line. I'd admit that our D is a bit shaky and unpredictable with Ohlund and Jovanovski. Sometimes those two show up and sometimes they don't. Now the true wildcard of the Canucks lies within our goaltending. I know Auld is most likely going to back up Cloutier this year and Auld has proved he can step up and take the pressure should Cloutier pull another injury or worse a stinker.

It's a great day to be a Canucks and NHL fan. I am definitely looking forward to the season.

Lawrence

i think the bertuzzi thing was disgusting - but that being said - the lockout wasn't his fault, and adding on the time at this stage would be ludacris

it's remarkable the support this man has in vancouver

Yeah. He should totally get over the fact that he has no chance of playing professional hockey again. I mean, you can't really blame Bertuzzi for...

oh wait. Yes, you can. Bertuzzi shouldn't play hockey until Moore does.

That is not an argument. The punishment should not be based solely on the length of injury for the opposing player, or else you'll have guys being taken out for seasons or more on borderline dirty hits. Why is it that I only hear this argument for hockey, but I didn't hear arguments that Brian Dawkins should've been suspended for all of 2003 for his hit on Ike Hilliard, for example?

The NHL did the right thing here. Bertuzzi should serve 10 more NHL games, but he sat out a whole season of professional hockey as well as two World Championships. I think he deserves to play again.

Not to mention that Moore may not play in the NHL again anyway - he wasn't a particularly good player and teams are unlikely to take a chance on him.

I saw that and was disappointed. I don't mind hockey fights and physical play. But Bertuzzi was lucky not to go to prison. He caught his break in criminal court. The absolute rock bottom minimum suspension should have been the rest of the last year and one full season and playoffs, not a lockout year. Longer than that would have been better. So he really shouldn't be playing this year. And he lied his guts out in all the interviews about it. "Wasn't trying to hurt him" Yeah, right.

Tell me this as a vancouver fan - what if a colorado player puts the exact same hit on bertuzzi this year in retaliation? What would you do to him?

The punishment is not based solely on the length of injury. Moreover, this infraction was particularly eggregious which is why the punishment should be particularly stiff. It was not a "dirty hit" - it was a premeditated attack.

Everyone else sat out a season as well. To attempt to count the last year as part of Bertuzzi's punishment is laughable. Bottom line, the man broke another player's neck through an intentionally injurous act and will not even sit for a full season. That, my friend, is unbelievable.

I should add, just so the cards are on the table:

1. I live in Denver.
2. Bertuzzi, prior to this act, was one of my favorite players.

I agree completely, except for the whole living in Denver thing. It's ridiculous that he's being allowed to play again.

He did miss a whole season. Every player had the option to go play in Europe or some other league. Bertuzzi was not allowed due to the suspension, so yes he was suspended for 17 months. 13 regular season games, 7+ playoff games, 40+ euro league games, 2 world championships.

And there is no way you can say his intent was to break the guys neck. Im not saying i condone it, but his intent was not to have happen what did.

Say you are out somewhere and someone tries to intentionally injure your girlfriend (naslund). Next time out this guy is there again, you try multiple times to fight him straight up man to man but he keeps running away and dodging you. Eventually you get so mad you try to force him to fight you by punching him in the back of the head, he falls awkwardly and you fall on him while 3 of his friends jump on your back thereby slamming his head/neck harder into the floor. Is that really worth 17 months?
