How badly did I play this?
We're down to the last 18 players of a 100 person tourney, top 10 get the money. I was in the middle of the stacks at my table with 15K. Blinds are 750/1500 with a 75 ante. We are 8 handed, so there is T2850 (8x75 + 1500 + 750). Everyone is playing tight and I have played 3 hands in 30 minutes (one blind battle, one blind steal, and one fold on the flop).
I am UTG+1 with 44 and raise to T5000. It is folded to BB who looks at me and asks, "Do you want me to call?". I barely have him covered. I say, "No, I want you to push." And so he pushes. And I call... |

Re: How badly did I play this?
If it's so tight, I wouldn't play 4-4 from such an early position.
Also, I don't think I'm calling his all-in raise either. Again, if the play is so tight, your very best case scenario is that he has AK or AQ. Otherwise you are looking at a higher pair, and now you are a huge dog. Just fold 4-4 next time from such an early position at this stage of the tourney. |

Re: How badly did I play this?
It's debatable whether or not your table talk hurt you, but it obviously didn't help you. Secondly, calling here is really just you convincing yourself he has two big cards and hoping for a coinflip. It's obvious that you would be pretty lucky to have a 50/50 chance at this point.
As much as it hurts to walk away from this pot, you have to fold. |

You are a 4-1 dog against a higher pair and a 5-4 favorite against 2 overcards. So you have to be up against a higher pair 60% of the time for this to be EV-. I would probably call. When someone asks you if you want them to call, they are fishing for information. Rather than trying to outsmart them, I would avoid that game and not respond. |

I would probably call. [/ QUOTE ] And this is why you are an incredible weak tournament poker player. Betgo, you're in the minor leagues here. |

Re: How badly did I play this?
Actually, it is sort of a matter of style, but I would just open push with 10xBB and 44 in a tight game with antes. It looks bad when you run into a big pair, but this play is EV+.

[/ QUOTE ] I appreciate the your usual adulation. However, I am not clear on your argument why calling is bad. Unless you have good reason to think villain is more likely have a pair than overcards, you pretty much have to call. When you raise 1/3 of your stack preflop, you are pretty much pot committed. |
