ESPN is worse than Fox superstars! Milking the wsop [/ QUOTE ] NBC wants the rights for 2006. ESPN knows they probably can't outbid them if NBC is determined. i would expect them to milk it for all it is worth this year considering the contract may go bye-bye |

(provided they had it in the first place) [/ QUOTE ] contract expired this year. i had not heard they renewed, but this poster usually has it right. i am surprised it was only a 1 yr deal tho, so i would love to see the story as well. unless of course i misunderstood and it expires next year, not this year. |

Thanks. [/ QUOTE ] I'm trying to find an actual press release, but I'll start with this article . Oliver's usually very reliable on all things involving TV and poker. This was the last year of ESPN's contract with what was then the Horseshoe for a whopping 55,000/year (article) Here's another article from the time of Annie Duke's win of the 2004 TOC regarding ESPN's rights to what was then 7 WSOP Circuit events a year. Re: Another 1 hour WSOP?
Wouldn't have minded at all if NBC had gotten it even if it meant fewer re-runs and more fluffy-features.
Matt Vasgersian does a really good job on poker play-by-play imo (and I REALLY never liked him very much on baseball) and Gabe Kaplan is the NUTS among poker TV-analysts. not sure if this broadcast team would have been together again if they had gotten the WSOP but there would have been a decent chance (especially since I assume Kaplan would want to have kept PLAYING in some of the events...but they could have had a guest commentator if he had made it very far). ESPN's coverage of the WSOP is growing a bit stale although I still think they do a decent job. But NBC has really impressed me with their coverage and announcing quality of the PSI (on Super Bowl Sunday) and heads-up stuff. Kevmath most certainly has it correct (haven't checked the link yet). He clearly knows his stuff regarding all of this TV sillyness. I too thought I had heard something about ESPN keeping it for a couple more years. Looks like we're stuck with Lon and Norm!!! (NBC will just have to set-up the HUC Part 2 or something I suppose). other questions: Is the WPT staying on the Travel Channel? Was ESPN trying to land it? |
