Default 99 UTG against a PFR

Winding up my first orbit at a tight Paradise table. Typically the table has seen 3-5 to the flop, with things folding to LP and turning into steal situations. No specific reads on villain yet.

I debated a preflop raise, since at this tight table there was a decent chance of narrowing it to just 1 or 2 opponents. Ultimately I went with my default play of a limp, but I'm not sure I like it.

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].
Hero calls, UTG+1 calls, 2 folds, MP2 raises, 1 fold, CO calls, 3 folds, Hero calls, UTG+1 calls.

Flop: (9.50 SB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (4 players)

Normally I pre-flop raise this. Check the flop and see what happens.

my personal opinion is that you should learn to raise preflop as your default play.

edit- as you played it i'd check the flop. (w/a pf raise i likely lead, but depends on # of opps.)

i'll check and see what happens. your 9s may still be good, but you have 2 too many players in to bet out IMO.

Thanks, I haven't tinkered with preflop in a while so it's good to revisit. Do you guys raise this preflop UTG at loose tables as well as tight ones? My boring default cutoff has been tens which is close.

At a tight table the added fold equity and being able to narrow to a small field definitely seems to make it worthwhile. At a loose table I'm guessing it's close enough to be a tossup?

Doesn't seem to be much debate about postflop so far, so I'll post a bit more. I guess this is unintentionally turning into a playalong, but I didn't want any of my later actions to bias the replies

Pocket 9's are one of the top 10 hands in Hold 'em. Not only should you be raising this in EP for the immediate value of the hand, but also because you will tend to get more action later on your monster hands.

This decision tends to be based more on your read of MP2 than anything else. If he would lead into this often enough with AK, AJ, AT, or a similar hand that he would PFR and autobet the flop, then this seems like at least a call (if not a raise). If he tends to tighten up when he misses, it looks like you are behind and should fold.

in the absence of reads this hand becomes much harder to play w/o a pf raise.

i can't rule out that this is an autobet. so i'd raise and lead a friendly turn card.
now that CO has folded, if we are ahead, it will help us a lot to get UTG+1 to fold...
