Playing against overpairs
This is a type of situation that came up twice today. I was up against a suspected overpair. MP3 was tight-aggressive-aggressive. Button was something of a calling station, I didn't pay him no mind. I put MP3 on a medium to high pair - TT, QQ, KK or AA. I don't know why I went for that check-raise, to be honest. I guess I wanted to see how much heat he could take. In hindsight it looks really silly. Would it be more better to just check-call down to the river, making the showdown as cheap as possible? Folding can't be an option, can it?

Re: Playing against overpairs
I'm not folding unless MP3 is a rock. I hate these situations too...

Re: Playing against overpairs
Don't include results.
Lead the flop? You'd like to knock Button off of this flop, if that's even possible. Check/calling is probably better. Checkraising isn't a great idea against a tight raiser either, although it may allow you to get away from the hand against players that won't try for a free card here. The typical TAG has a AA-TT, AQs+, AK capping range here, so you're in bad shape in a large pot. In any case (bet/call or check/call on flop), this is a situation where I consider a turn bet/fold. I don't want TAG taking a free card, especially when Button is hanging around, but if I'm raised I know I have 2 outs and can fold. 2/4 should be straightforward enough for this play. |

Re: Playing against overpairs
Readless, call down, a rock, I fold the turn. Everything else this is fine.
Tight player capable of blind stealing, I check-call the flop intending to check-raise the turn. |

Re: Playing against overpairs
A good player is going to open raise a wide range from MP3.

Re: Playing against overpairs
A TAG isnt playing less than JJ that way IMO.
