Dealer giving me lip?
I played at the Trump Indiana tonight, my first casino experience. I was nervous at first, but I settled in quick. The only issue I ran into was in regards with tipping. I know that there have been quite a few threads on this issue lately but I have not heard anything in this area.
I was playing 2/5 200 Max NL. I had no real tipping strategy going in, just thought I would get a good feel for it. Well in my first half hour I won three pots. The first one was I picked up on the turn and I didn't tip. The next two I won with a showdown and I tipped $5 both times. They all were pots ranging from $50 to $80. Then I was moved to a different table and didn't have a hand for about an hour. Then on one hand I was able to pick up the pot on the flop after I re-raised a guy pretty big. I didn't tip. 15 minutes later I won a big one, flipped a $5 chip towards the dealer, and she seemed confused and asked "This for me? I didn't know cuz you stiffed me last time." I kinda was surprised by the comment and I didn't respond. A few hours later I won a pot without showdown, didn't tip. Next hand I won at the showdown and threw in the $5. Dealer asked if I needed it changed. When I said it was for her she was extremely grateful, almost surprised that I tipped a whole five dollars. All three paragraphs were different dealers. Is this normal? Do some dealers just expect to be tipped every pot while some truly see it as an honor? I mean they all split them up between them anyways, so why the sass from that dealer? |

Re: Dealer giving me lip?
$5 is a lot. Generally, a $50 - $80 pot will get a dealer $1-2.
When the second dealer said, "...because you stiffed me last time," I'd have taken it back and said, "Not anymore." Third dealer was proper in asking if you needed change. Like I said, $5 is the exception, not the rule. I'm all for tipping more if you feel like it. Just letting you know what the standards are. Props to you for hooking them up. It makes up for the people who refuse to tip at all. Just remember it eats into your bottom line. Also, in many places, dealers keep their own tips. Personally, I don't like when they're pooled. It means that the great dealers don't really get anything extra, and the bad ones (with bad attitudes) hurt everyone. Tipping is customary. However, it's usually not $5. |

Re: Dealer giving me lip?
If any dealer said something like "I didn't know because you stiffed me last time", not only would I immediately ask that I get it chopped and get $4.50 back on it, I would also make sure to have a quiet talk with the floor about his dealer's attitude.
That said, since these dealers didn't really know your tip "plan", its a lot easier if you just throw a dollar a pot their way. Especially in NL if you're only tipping on showdown pots, you're going to win a lot of pots without a toke. |

Re: Dealer giving me lip?
Yeah, I know that $5 is quite a bit in tips. I might have given about $30-$35 throughout the night. But I had a good night. I was just happy to be there tonight.
I just thought it was really rude for the dealer to say that. I kinda wanted to take it back, but I just don't have the stones for that. I'm glad that she left about 3 minutes later and I did not see her again. |

Re: Dealer giving me lip?
Tip $1 for every pot over $30.
If the pot is enormous, maybe tip $2. There, isn't that easy? Dealers appreciate consistency. I might give the 2nd dealer a line and let her know how I feel about her comment before I stopped tipping her altogether. I would defintely let her know I didn't appreciate the line. Hey, everyone screws up sometimes. Unless of course, she said it like a real bitch. Then I'm done and I'm letting the floorman know. b |

Re: Dealer giving me lip?
First off, I WANT you to play at my tables!!! $5 is hella big tip for any game to be honest. If I could average a buck a hand all day, i'd make more than I do now. It's more like 60-75cents/hand average.
Second in regards to this: [ QUOTE ] I mean they all split them up between them anyways, so why the sass from that dealer? [/ QUOTE ] This is what I hate about some casinos. They still or do make poker dealers split tokes which is stupid. I love working for my own money. I generally make about 10-25% more than most of the dealers I work with because I'm quick and courteous to all players. I try to deal the best game possible. I like the go for your own system. Whenever I go to play, I will tip the better dealers more on average than the worse ones because of the quality of the games they deal and the service they provide. Attitude also plays a large role in my tip amounts as well. |

Re: Dealer giving me lip?
I would have reported the dealer to the floor..
Also $5 is WAY too generous.. $1 standard tip, whatever the pot size is, is more than enough. |

any dealer that mouths off like that after being given a $5 tip is a complete moron.

[/ QUOTE ] I'll say one thing--I stop tipping to dealers who don't say thank you after each tip. Tips are voluntary, so if they start acting unappreciative--f them. |

[/ QUOTE ] So, it's not good enough that the dealer does his job well, controls the action and keeps the game moving? You also need to have your ego stroked and be told what a wonderful person you are? I suppose you stop and say "thank you" after each hand you're dealt, right? No, and let me guess why: because you're "entitled" to that hand while tipping is optional. Yes, the polite thing for a dealer to do is say thanks, but as long as he keeps the game moving and is not overtly rude, I don't care. Sometimes a dealer will forget to stop and thank me because he's too busy shuffling and getting my next hand to me and I'm just fine with that. SpaceAce |
