PokerStars 0.05/0.10 Hold'em (7 handed) converter
Preflop: Hero is MP2 with K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Hero posts a blind of $0.05. Turn: (5 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players) SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, SB calls, UTG calls. River: (8 BB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players) SB bets, UTG calls, Hero raises, SB calls, UTG 3-bets, Hero caps, SB calls, UTG calls. Final Pot: 20 BB Fistt hand, no reads. I think it's obvious that I got rivered. I was pretty sure SB or UTG had the straight, but I was trying to lose as much money with my set. Is this gonna hurt me or benefit me in the long run? |

I think you played this right. The straight was a backdoor, making it somewhat less likely. I think you're up against two pair or a lower set too often not to cap the river. Especially with SB calling down after his raise - you almost certainly have him beat.

The river cap is pretty bad.
This may seem like a silly question, but why were you trying to lose the maximum? Did I miss a memo or something? |

Well that's what I've been reading all over. If you hit a set put as much money in the pot as you can. If you don't lose a lot of money with your set, you're not playing it correctly. Wrong?

In general sets are strong hands and should be played as such. However there are still times given the texture of the board and the action that a set is no longer the probable best hand and should be layed down.
Having said that, I think you played this hand fine. The river probably comes back capped to you anyway as multiple people seemed to catch a piece of that river. |

[/ QUOTE ] I think you may be taking this quote too literally. If there were four clubs on the board and it went bet/raise would you 3-bet and call a cap? *Edited to avoid any smart-assed confusion. |

If you don't lose a lot of money with your set, you're not playing it correctly. [/ QUOTE ] I'm sorry are you literally suggesting if your opponent showed you a better hand you should keep raising him because "I have a set therefore I should lose more money"? The concept at hand is the idea that a set is a strong hand, and if it gets beat, it will be costly. It is also meant to suggest you don't play it weakly as it will very frequently be the best hand. But you can't turn off your brain and say "I have a set I'm going to raise every chance I get and if I lose its ok because I read somewhere that I should lose alot of money with sets" that is just insane. -DeathDonkey |

[/ QUOTE ] I think that's basically right, but, like all maxims in poker, you strongly need to consider the whole situation before making a decision. There are several situations where, given the board and action, you should fold your set. They are relatively rare in loose micro-limits, but it's always important to think about the concepts behind these phrases, and not just apply them mechanically. |

Well definetly if the board is scary I'm gonna adjust and just call it down or fold. Im not talking about capping with your set of 6's on a board with 4 spades on it either.
