No reads on the table as I'd just arrived. Do you ever consider checking on the turn here? I was split on betting or checking.

I'd bet the river for value.

On a more draw-heavy board I'd bet the turn. I probably would've checked here.
FWIW I think a river bet sucks - NH. |

If UTG was a reasonably tight early position raiser, he could have raised with AA-TT,AK or AQ. So an A on the flop was not a good card for you, as he could easily have made top pair. You could also have been behind to KK.
However, when UTG checks both the flop and turn, it suggests that he might be worried about you having either an 8 or the A yourself. I think that you were correct to bet the turn, because you had been checked to, might have had the best hand and checking would have given a free card to anyone drawing to the flush. Just to finish, I think your checking behind on the river was reasonable also. Thats because you could still easily have been behind to a better hand. |

I didnt bet the river as after the turn I was pretty sure I was behind to anything that would call my bet. ie busted flush folds but Ax or KK call.

Some people will slowplay an 8 all the way to the river. Some will be scared to bet their Ace. If one was on a draw he missed it.
Still, I think you can find a bet here. After-all, you're risking one to make up to 3 more. Would you fold to a check-raise? |

Betting the turn is good. There's no reason to put anyone on an A given the lack of aggression. I think you should also bet the river for value. Other PP hands will call you down, no obvious draws have been made, and it's unlikely to be reraised unless someone is very poorly slowplaying an 8.

check the river. how is this a value bet- what are we beating that is going to call us down?
A- beats us 8- beats us busted flush draw= wont call our river bet lower PP MAY call the river bet KK (UTG raiser, maybe) will call and beat us. so basically a lower PP is about the only thing that i see that will call our river bet and lose to our hand. thus im not a fan of betting. |

[/ QUOTE ] i agree in theory - but i know i bet this river against weak tighties who i would think are folding better hands. this may be a basic river play that i routinely screw up. i guess since we close the action a check is better? and if we are oop, a bet is better? |
