Is there plenty of oil?
Exxon expects to increase production by 1.2 million bpd by 2007.
Canadian heavy oil sands and oil shale expected to account for 30% of supply by 2010. But even these optimists expect conventional oil to peak in 2020. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...2038_mz011.htm natedogg |

Re: Is there plenty of oil?
Good article, it touches on both sides fairly well.
I'm personally a bit skeptical on the oil sands and shale in Canada at this point. Right now it's not anywhere near as profitable to extract and use as conventional oil (I believe oil shale has a negative net output at this point but I could be wrong). While the supply should be there, the price is still going to be very high. Right now the prospect of technology for utilizing these sources efficiently isn't there but hopefully will be in the next couple decades. |

Operating costs at major oil companies now average $13.75 a barrel, a 33% increase since 1999, according to brokerage firm A.G. Edwards Inc. (AGE ). Even CERA believes that oil production could hit a plateau around 2020. If that happens, the world economy could face a major setback. [/ QUOTE ] good article. BTW, what the hell are you doing making a post like this? I am in shock, pleasantly surprised, but in shock. |

The problem is in the extraction method. The most promising technology I have found so far is from a company called Sequioa Interest who have this product called DiamondFlo which is a biodegradable chemical soap compound for extracting oil from from the tar sands. Pretty interesting. -Gryph |
