I was in Tahoe a little over a month ago for the first time. I was in town to attend my sister's wedding. Harvey's had the more active room, but it was pretty lame.

Most of the tables were 3-6, with one 6-12 game. Over the weekend, they also had a no limit game going. I didn't play in that game, but I think it was 5-10, with a $500 minimum buy-in, with no maximum.

The action at Horizon was much slower. I only went there one afternoon and had to wait a good while for a game to get going. The people there were extremely friendly and capable, but they didn't have a lot of players.

when i played at the horizon it gave me a "boy, its like im on that show tilt" kinda feeling. it was me vs 7 guys who knew each other, were dealers and seemed to get that i knew what i was doing and stayed out of my way. there were 2 tourists at the table who got destroyed, i think we'll probably make a run to reno.

Harvey's has the bigger and better room of the two, but it's nothing to write home about. If you're there on a weekend, there should be about 5 tables going, but the tables are all low limit, unless you play in the NL game.

If you do play NL, you might want to take a lot of money. When I was there, a black guy was playing with a gigantic wad of C-notes behind his stack. I don't know if he was a good player or not, but he had everyone else at the table covered many times over.

One thing that jumped out at me while playing at Harvey's was the enormous difference in quality between the dealers there and the ones at the Bellagio, where I play in Vegas. Some of them at Harvey's were good, but most were mediocre and some were just plain awful.

Think these rooms are both pretty fun during ski season. Have played there three years running during January.

Horizon: Has added one or two tables. Usually only 2-5 spread holdem. A game engineered to sitck it to limp-o-matic tourists (as far as I can tell). During January there are usually 3+ tables going, and $40 tournament daily at 5? This is chaos, with rebuys and mediocre management. I'm going to avoid it in the future.

Harvey's: 12 tables? As mentioned earlier... staff mostly live here to ski, not b/c it's a great place to make a living as a dealer. As a result, some are decent, others are terrible. During winter, they had 3-6, 4-8, 5-10 and 10-20, as well as the 5-10 NL and I think a 1-2 NL. I stuck to the low limits, which was pretty hilarious with stoned snowboarders, and general drunkeness (yours truly included). Room was full, with short waitlist at peak times, which is earlier than other casinos due to the skiers.

Good times. I'd stay in Tahoe vs drive to Reno. But if you hit Reno, peppermill is where it's at. Neon bebe.
