Default words of wisdom, quotable quotes....please add to this...

This is a cross post...sorry. (ok..actually, only between here and UPF) -

thinking about a paraphrase of something Patton said and transposing it to poker....(my idea) - and I decided to make this thread since I've lost enough of my BR for one day...please add your own as you see fit....(Mike Caro is great at these little bits of wisdom)

"No NL player ever made money by pushing all his chips into the pot first. He won it by convincing the other dumb son-of-a-bitch to push all HIS chips into the pot first..."

"when in doubt, assume that the beautiful woman on the other side of the table will NOT sleep with you if you muck the hand when she bets...- so repop it if you have the nuts"

"given a choice, it's probably better to play a game where two players MIGHT be occasionally colluding then a game where the rake is a buck or two higher...(hence, play online)"

"in a NL tournament, it's easier making money trying to bet people off better hands then it is trying to beat them in the 50/50 draw "

"Never, but NEVER show pocket cards when you don't have to...If you're playing online, and there's no chop, and everyone mucks to your BB, and you show 7/2 offsuit just to be a bastard and show how bad your cards are....rest assured you will never get a free blind again. - conversely, if you always raise with AA and show them, you're letting your opponents know that odds are, your next couple hands are gonna suck...LOL"

"before trying to play poker full time for a living...it makes sense to try to make a living at it as a part time job. So take whatever time you want (8-10 hrs a week) and try to have a a part time job playing poker. When you can do this for a year, and make 1-2 BB an hr, THEN go full time...and not a moment before...even Roy Cooke, God bless his skill, isn't going to risk family and success on merely poker cards alone....no reason for you to try"

"be very afraid of people who play can of corn (23 offsuit) - like they were pocket A's. - In fact, change tables when they come...LOL"

"It used to be 90% of poker players deluded themselves into thinking they were winning players who were winning or getting too much bad luck. Now thanks to the internet, half of them can blame their losses on crooked internet cardrooms instead of looking for flaws in their game. Lady Luck appreciates this - and so should you."

"nothing is funnier or sadder then a short stack criticizing a large stack's playing style....except a railbird in an online tourney who busted out early...then it's even funnier and sadder.

"write down who you think is too aggressive/passive/makes mistakes.....then be stunned months later at how naive you were once you got to know their play better.....keeps you humble. I'm stunned to see players who I once wrote down as being "too aggressive" in the top leader boards for tournament rankings online.

"you will probably make more money eliminating tells from your play then you will spotting others. Remember, there are probably 5-6 people observing you at any given time. Look for them, but try harder to get rid of them in your own play."

"anyone who comes to your game talking about how new they are and how they've only played once or twice before should be treated EXTRA carefully"

when sitting to the left of a loose cannon in limit games, you can usually make good money repopping his raises and getting it heads up. This will be very profitable until the table catches on as to what you're doing and calls three bets cold. This gives you about three times...LOL"

when you're scared to push all-in preflop even on AA, it's time to take a break from poker....you're getting run down too much, getting gunshy and it's affecting your play..

"skill is always better then luck...except in LL online games, then no skill in the world can save you from the variance...sacrifice chickens to Lady Luck - anyone at a table who says this is the loosest game he's ever played never played online"

Never call a straddle if you're the first one in. If it's good enough to call, it's definately good enough to raise and get heads up."

The internet allows people to play two games at once, therefore allowing them to turn a 1 BB/hr style of play and probably driving it straight into the negative EV....don't be one of these. If you're going to play two 1/2 games, might as well combine them into one 2/4 game so you can focus...this also goes for those who play in one window and surf for porn in the other....shame, shame...

If the woman loves you, and you love her, and she says "it's poker or me" - screw the game...the biggest suckout and lucky draw in the world is when a guy hooks up with a girl who loves him...he's ALWAYS the underdog to get a situation like that and she's generally better then he deserves...and poker then isn't worth that. Take up golf...many a fine poker player has made the transition to golf.

There's hardly a hand in PL Omaha that's worth raising preflop, esp. with more then one caller in there allready. Hell, you could have the NUTS - wait to see the flop...(ok, I'm kinda generalizing on that and quoting TJ Cloutier a bit...I think he said something similar in his book and if he didn't, it's still good wisdom - I've never felt comfortable in PL Omaha till at least the turn card..)

If you had a mystical gift to know what the river card was going to be preflop...you'd still probably lose money if you can't put your opponents on a hand - that's one of the most important skills you can have. Work on it.

last but not least...."Never take food from a skinny cook or advice from a bad poker player" -

worthy of wisdom? - up there with "in the beginning, everything was even money?" - Nah...LOL - feel free to add your own or comment...

I say any woman that good is already married so accept a scrub and tell her you are going to play poker whenever you feel like it! (Just make sure she can cook)

I believe this may be true for the limits you chose but you should make more in two 3/6 games tnah one 6/12. The jump in skill level of your opponents to 5/10 or 6/12 in online poker is much greater than the difference between 1/2 and 2/4.

Good post, I enjoyed the thoughts it genersted.

My favorite Sun Tzu quote:

"To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. "

And relevant to poker:

"A military operation involves deception. Even though you are competent, appear to be incompetent. Though effective, appear to be ineffective."

There's no such thing as a good hand. Just a good situation.
