Posted this a few days ago, but got buried. Please help. New to HE, but not to Poker. Played 126 hours of .50-1.00 home game. Made approx. 5.50/hour, which is 5 big bets. Played 20 hours of 2-4 in Atlantic City. Made approx. 11.00/hr, which is nearly 3 big bets. Have read a lot, kept stats, continued visiting 2+2, etc... Still do not know if it's time to move to a bigger game. Would really appreciate some advice from experienced players. Thanks.

If you are winning, have a decent understanding of the game, and can afford the potential losses, there's no reason not to move up. Give 5/10 a shot and see if you feel comfortable throwing around the $5 chips.
Just don't expect to keep winning 3-5 big bets an hour. It ain't gonna happen. |

Don't know if you missed it, but here is my reply from you original post...
In the grand scheme of things 100+ hours is not a significant amount of time to give you accurate stats. It is also important to keep your stats for different games seperately as your home game and casino games are different games. Sure you can mix them together to get a sense of your overall hourly rate, but they must be kept seperate if you want to know if you are beating a specific game. My advice as for moving up would be if your understanding of poker theory is such that you recognize where you are making your money against your opponents and you have the bankroll to do it, it is time to move up. Your sample is far too small to draw any solid conclusions about your win rate. Having said that, if you can afford to lose 300 BB or so at a higher limit... and are willing to be introspective about your game when you are losing and/or take the sometimes humbling step of moving back down in limits... then give it a shot.

Only you know if you're ready, but if you have to ask....you're probably not.

i think this is good advice. it also seems like if you think you can beat the bigger game but are weary about the amount of the limits, then you'll probably play with scared money, putting yourself at a disadvantage to start.
i feel like i can play a higher limit, but i don't have the bankroll for it. i definitly won't be playing my A game while shortstacked and worried. take the repeated advice of this forum and don't spend your bankroll like i did. heh, i'd have enough to play a higher limit, if i hadn't blown it cause i saw it as "extra" cash. |
