Default Pot Equity

Can any 2 + 2ers give me clarification on pot equity?

I'm reworking my way through SSH and looking for a little futher discussion on the subject.

It's how much of the pot you 'own'.
ie. the size of the pot x your chance of winning the hand.

For example, if there's $20 in the pot, and you have a 30% chance of winning the hand, your pot equity is $20 x 0.3 = $6.

It's a measure of what you're giving up by folding.

I'm sure there's loads more to it than that, but that's my understanding of what the basic concept of pot equity means.

So how would you use pot equity in comparison to pot odds, outs, etc.

It should be obvious that if your equity is less than the pot odds in question, e.g. facing a pot size bet when only having 30% equity that you should fold, whereas if your equity is greater against a certain number of opponents you should raise.
