Default Enough not to go broke

I play mostly limit holdem but am going to venture out into nolimit. The game is 1/2 blinds, so how much should i buy in for to ensure not going broke? Also is it smart to play nolimit cash games or just stick to touneys? Because i wanna play for 8 hours not just sit down and be broke in an hour, and knowing the nature of no limit its possible with bad run of cards.

Well, theoretically, you could sit down with 2bb and be there for 12 hours, or sit down with 1000bb and be gone on the first hand, such is the nature of no limit.

Generally, people tend to buy in for 100bb, or $200 in a 1/2 game. This is usually enough that you can lose a pot or two and not have to rebuy, as well as give you enough wiggle room to really play some poker.

Uhh, also, make sure you have about 5x your buyin covered in your bankroll. A bad run of cards can easily destroy lesser bankrolls.

If you trust your skills, always buyin for the max. If you're playing online, this varies between sites. I've heard at casino cash NL games, there is no real max ... in that case, make 100x the BB your minimum buying, and consider buying in for more if the stack sizes are particularly large.

Say you have 500$ bankroll for this game. Its better to split to 3x150 + 1small reload for example than buy in for maximum. This will reduce probability of going broke significantly.

How about not playing 1/2NL until you are a better NL player? Is that a possibility or does that amount of money just not mean enough to you? If not, then I would say make sure you have 15-20 buyins, not the 5 or 2.5 being suggested other places in this thread. NL is a whole new world, trust me. But you will never go back to limit play if you become good at NL.

well, you can always sit down and fold every hand and play for 8 hours

now for a real reply: NLHE can run big streaks, both up and down. generally, its very hard to lose any more than 4 max buyins in a night of B&M play. if you play super loose and play every single hand, uou could burn more. 800$ should be enough to cover the worst possible day you could have, if the buyin is 200 max.

for the other 99% of days, 400$ should be enough

What I do is keep 20 buy ins for whatever level I'm playing, and when I get 4 surplus buy ins for the next level I take a shot, if I think I can beat it. I also withdraw for personal expenses, and put money in savings.

This post is crazy, and you haven't been playing long enough if you even remotely believe it.
