SNG player working on cash game. 100NL, AJ in BB... Thoughts?
Subject says it all. How is my line here? Weak tight? I am still happy with the fold, but would love some feedback from regular cash players.... Lead the turn? (I figure only hand that calls/raises beats me, hence the check.)

Is this hand just painfully boring, or painfully obvious?

Re: SNG player working on cash game. 100NL, AJ in BB... Thoughts?
Calling a raise with AJo out of position is generally a bad idea and this hand illustrates why-- you have no idea where you're at. If you get action on this board, you're either up against a maniac or you're beat. If you're going to fold on the turn, you might as well fold to the flop minraise. You don't have odds on the flop to call and hope for a jack on the turn (or an ace to give you a likely split).

Re: SNG player working on cash game. 100NL, AJ in BB... Thoughts?
First off, I wouldn't call a raise OOP with AJ (without a read that would advise otherwise). It's a dominated hand in most of these situations.
I would fold to his minraise on the flop. It's a drawless board (he's not semi-bluffing) and I think his minraise means business since you're representing the ace with your pot bet. |

why not check/raise the flop?
if called, consider shutting down... (or leading small and folding to a raise) |

Re: SNG player working on cash game. 100NL, AJ in BB... Thoughts?
A-J unsuited is a pain in the butt to play from early position when someone shows strength. So I vote fold the pre flop raise. If I had A-J unsuited in first position I would fold and not call partly because I would not be willing to call a raise. If he had minraised I might call from the BB, but not a 3 bet.
On the flop betting is OK, but when he raises I believe he is not bluffing. In his shoes he probably thinks it is likely that I have an ace and his raise says he is confident he can beat my ace (AK or AQ is likely). As someone said the board does not lend itself to draws. On the idea about check-raising with the A-J, I think I'd consider that play if everyone had called my BB and there was no raise. Then a check might induce a bluff. But with my opponent already showing strength I'd prefer to bet out on the flop, hoping my opponent did not like the ace and I take the pot - and fold if raised. |

Fold pre-flop, check flop, fold to flop raise if you choose to bet, fold turn.
The only hands I'm betting this flop with given the action so far have either an eight or a king in them. |

If he had minraised I might call from the BB, but not a 3 bet. [/ QUOTE ] Thank you all for the feedback. This is where I was coming from, but coming from the tournament side, I tend to be a bit vigorous about blind defense, so I called. (OOP, I generally drop AJo like it's hot, but I have a hard time dropping it from the BB.) Is this a definite leak? |

Re: SNG player working on cash game. 100NL, AJ in BB... Thoughts?
Yes. Offsuit high cards just don't play well out of position in NL, especially when you can't be 100% sure of your kicker. On the flop, I like checking/calling, actually. You're in a WA/WB situation, and you keep the pot small.
