Default NL hand....how bad was my \"mistake\"

Ok, here are two hands from .25/.5 blind NL game at UB. The first hand is posted to show that I stole a small pot. In the second hand I used these funds to call a rock preflop who obviously had AA (or maybe KK) while I had 55. I figured if I flop my set I can bust him. Did I play the hand wrong? The AA guy was convinced that I did. But I think it might have been a positive EV play since it only costs me $3.50 to see if I make set. And if I make set, I stand to win all his money. Am I smoking crack?

well, you made over 10-1 implied odds on your call of 8-1...you hit your hand and he overplayed his AA like an idiot. love the guys with entitlement, dont ya. if he bet a little more preflop to where you wouldnt have been able to make 8-1 after the flop, then it could be a mistake...if he raised maybe....$8-10, youd have to make $64 in profit for +EV i think....

i think youplayed it fine...the other guy doesnt know how to play n/l that well if he thinks he has the nuts on the flop with only top pair. he trapped himself. the mope

You can call up to 10 percent of your stack with a pair or suited connectors if your opponant has at least as much in his stack. Therfore your mistake was not a mistake at all.

Broker and bernie seem rightly to think you didn't.

As I recall you noting in some of your previous posts, a lot of the chat that passes at that particlar UB table is needling and whining more suited to an elementary school playground. Don't let it get to you.

Default Come on over to the NL/PL Forum!

By calling here you take about a 8:1 shot at flopping your set. As long as you and your opponent have enough chips in front of you to get you a better payoff than 8:1, you're fine. The implied odds are very important in nl/pl; we talk about stuff like this all the time in the NL/PL forum. Check it out.

OK, I'm no PL/NL master and you're reasoning about having the implied odds if you outflop him with a set against his big PP are great, but...

You say "call a rock preflop who obviously had AA (or maybe KK) while I had 55. I figured if I flop my set I can bust him."

Knowing that he goes allin and you are doing the calling how silly would you have looked if he had had KK (and the flopped higher set)?

I wouldn't have been rubbing my hands with glee to see him go allin for 40 more when one of the two hands you put him on has you buried and drawing to one out...
