final table strategy in an unusual situation

i was just playing a final table with a pretty normal prize distribution (2700 for first,1700 for second,1000 for third,700 for fourth)
anyway,when it got down to the last 4 i was short stacked compared to the others but in no hurry...
all three of the other remaining players had shown a willingness to go all in/make huge overbets in weird situations...
i'm talking betting 180,000 into 20,000 as a bluff when its checked to them,or going all in for 30 times the pot with top pair no kicker,that sort of thing...

now normally with four left i'm raising every other hand,however in this situation i decided to limp as much as i could,i dont think i raised at all...
i ended up going out in third,when it got down to the last three of us one,the most volatile,had about five times what me and the other guy had...
we were both gradually getting blinded away (he was going all in randomly to keep afloat,i would call and bet the odd flop,made a few calls to stay in it)when the other guy doubled up,and i ended up having to take a chance to double up and it didnt work...
so i'm wondering did i do the right thing?
ie-stay in,try and keep an alright stack,see as many flops as i could,etc

How many BB did you have? I wouldn't try to see as many flops as I could, I would just wait for a big hand in my blind or a premium hand and then wait for them to bluff at it.

like 40 big blinds or so for a lot of it
the reason i was limping was that it was possible to tell when they weren't interested in a pot and take it down a lot-they were either making outrageous plays or check folding
also,i played over 100 hands with them and didnt get a hand worth taking a stand with preflop-if i raise with A10 (the best hand i saw throughout) the big stack would be fairly likely to push with any two cards above 8,and i didnt really want to take a coinflip while i could stay alive and wait for two pair
