Default Back to basics - follow me through this tourney - tourney 1

Okay, hopefully other newbies at MTT's such as myself can get something out of threads like these.

Once a week I'm going to post all the hands I've played in a tournament where I had an interesting decision to make. I wont make them all in one post, but update as I go along.

Today, I am playing an Empire Freeroll. First place pays approx. $135, and that's what I'm gunning for, especially with only 180 entrants or so.

First interesting hands of this level:

I think this is a great idea. Definitely a great way to get up to speed with your MTT play. Good luck.

Hopefully less experienced posters will follow your lead rather than the typical, "How do I win a major MTT post".

As far as your play. So far so good, maybe a questionable raise with the QJs, I think you can get away with limping there, but it is probably not much difference.

One more thing to watch out for, make sure you mix up your continuation bets. Looks like you bet slightly over the pot with your only made hand, and 2/3 or so on your misses. Again, not a big deal so far, but something to be aware of.

I was gonna say almost exactly the same thing. Don't be afraid to bet 2/3 of the pot on your hits too. Last thing you want is for an observant player or two to realize that when rags fall, you are suddenly lowering your bet.

Yeah, I did bet 5/6 of the pot with the AQo

Thankfully these players arent very observant. The table is playing weak tight. The AQo was weird in that the guy kept calling.

By the river I put him on a weak Q, but maybe he had A-rag. Dunno.

I don't think you are raising enough before the flop. With the AQo from the SB, raising 50 chips isn't going to do anything other then cause you to play a bigger pot when you're out of position, which is pretty bad. I would probably be raising to about 120 here to make the pot 190 (giving them slightly worse then 2 to 1 odds), otherwise people will call you with marginal hands because they have position on you and are getting 3.5 to 1 odds to see a flop (as they were with your 35 chip raise).

This is a good idea.

I like the play overall, with the only exceptions being:

The raise with QJs (as mentioned above) - I'd limp here.

The SB raise with AQ - I think you need to raise more here (maybe to T80 or T100). A raise of T55 will not fold anyone, and therefore acts only as a pot sweetener in a hand where you're OOP against two limpers. You're just asking to win a small one or lose a big one here.

Otherwise I like it, and keep 'em coming.
